Airaid Filtration - Without the Box

Trying to find and decide on what aftermarket air intake to put on my HHR has been mind boggling, to say the least . I like the looks of the Weapon-R Dragon ($113.00 on e-Bay) and the CGS ($214.00 on eBay), but I do not like were the filter is located. I like the filter location of the AirAid system ($280.00 on eBay), but hate the box around it. With as much room as it takes up you might as well leave the stock intake on. Not to mention the people at AirAid say it will not work on my 2.2 liter because I have a 5-speed tranny. Also, they have no intention of making alterations so that it will, in there own words “there are not enough HHR’s with manual transmissions for us to develop an intake system for them”. The K&N system ($230 on eBay) looks fairly nice, but it is only for the 2.4 liter engine and they have no intention of offering one for the 2.2 liter engine. The GMPP Air Intake ($380.00 several places) looks absolutely great, but finding one is the hard part.

So, I have decided to use pieces of the AirAid system and create my own intake. But I am not going to buying a whole system. I contacted AirAid and found that I can order only the pieces I want as well as the prices for each item. I know that I will have to crate a bracket to support the intake and possibly some form of heat shield, but that will be the interesting part of my decision (one of a kind). Below is a list of the items, if anyone else is interested in making their own intake. Also, I have included the contact information for ordering them.

Have fun and stay rollin’

Parts Ordered:
$ 59.99 - #KIT195T (AirAid Intake Tube)
$ 1.00 - #KIT15BHC3038 (8-32 x 3/8” Screws - Need 2/$0.50 each)
$ 46.45 - #720-440 (AirAid Premium Filter)
$ 107.44 - Total (Plus Shipping)

Parts can be ordered by calling Ben at 1-800-498-6951 Ext. 728. Monday through Friday between 0800 – 1700 Mountain Time.

Thanks for the info....... If I do an intake it will be fabricated, not very satisfied whith what's available and my beef with the factory box is I can't see the motor.... (not a major problem, but....Yeah!) Good to know the air tube is available separate.

Is this only available through Ben at that number?

I am not sure - he was the individual that responded to my inquiry. I would say to call the number and talk to whoever answers. You have the part number and price - any problems have them confirm it with Ben. I know what you mean by the stock air box obscuring the engine - I have a spare air box that I am going to cut down and see how that looks. Have a good day

Someone just posted about GMPP CAI for $299. + ship

I agree about not being able to see the actual motor. but other than that, I'm ok with it. Or till a deal comes along..

Looks good. I do agree that the box covers the engine too much but without the box the intake air will be a little warmer.
It looks like I will be doing a dyno day next weekend, so I will post up my numbers with the full airaid intake on an auto 2.2.

I gave "Ben" at Airaid a call and the price has gone up. The "Tube" is 79.00 and the airfilter is 60.00. Still looking. But still thinking about it.

Looks like the AirAid people have gotten wise to the fact people are buying the individual items and not the whole kit. I guess they just want to make more money.
