Electric Driven Supercharger

Something more then the usual leaf blower adapted for cars.

Thanks jdmcomp, Interesting technology. Sounds like it only work on very small engines as 1.2l is mentioned. But can you say "no lturbo lag".

"The VTES electric supercharger, which operates independently of engine speed, can significantly increase the air charge density over the critical first 10 combustion cycles of a low speed transient. Fitted with a low inertia compressor, the supercharger accelerates from its 5,000rpm idle speed to a maximum speed of 70,000rpm in less than 0.35 seconds. The system is highly dynamic and the intake charge boosting and resulting torque enhancement is achieved very typically in less than a quarter of a second (250ms)."

I have never heard any thing good about these things. But I could be wrong. Like they say " Don't believe everything you hear."

I have seen only one that worked, and it required an additional battery bank. Just go turbo.

Yeah, that would be as silly as electric power steering or god forbid electric powered cars.

i think the weight of the batteries you would need to do this would pretty much cancel out any power gain if any.

Most if not all Electric superchargers to date do VERY VERY VERY VERY little or nothing to add horse power to cars.
This CPT design is just like a vortec supercharger, but have a reluctance motor driving it instead of a pulley and belt. If they can spin the charger fast enough, which 70,000 RPM should be, and with enough force, yes it would build boost, but there is no proof so far that there design makes cost effective power.

They came out in 2000 and claimed everything with no proof. They have been around for 7-8 years and have yet to bring it to production. Also last I read about it...its major downfall was it only worked in VERY short bursts, and only added small amounts of boost for short periods of time.

Remember, the engine they are using it on is only 1.2L.
I can see the problems with a larger engine, but a small one??

That would be perfect for my riding mower.
