Has anyone noticed a difference between 87 vs 89 octane?

I ran 600 miles on a single tank of 87 in a Shiny Black SS to put all of this to bed. I went to my normal routes, did normal things, just tried to eek every ounce when i could.
I succeeded and my SS did not go boom...lol
Nor did noice any change (mileage not power) once I went back to 94 octane if there is a difference it isnt anything i noticed. However many with the 2.4 report a small 1-3mpg difference when NOT hypermiling going from 87 to 89. The cost almost always equals out with the mpg gain. So if your "butt dyno" feels more power....use 89
You have an auto, which makes hypermiling tougher, although I went from 26 to 36 mpg overall using those tricks.
Even so assuming your just "driving normally" and you car is "operating" normally and you do live in pool-table-flat southern florida #1 and #2 are most likely (not your hhr) problem.
LOL, not to pick on you..but it is highly unlikely that you can satisfy condition # 1 and #2 WITHOUTalso satifsying condition #5 AND NOT satisfy #3(a) and or (b) and or (c).
:) Check it out for yourself.

And lol believe it or not, I don't meet condition number 2. If I drive fast its only 5 mph over the limit most of the time, don't leave the line hot (most of the time hehe), and have yet to hit 70 in my HHR yet!
You're right about the DIC showing less than 30, I missed that! It's currently shows 15 mph

Yeah living in the southern Florida climate I'm sure doesn't help much

Bingo!
That is the primary reason that your mpg is so low. However realize with average speeds like that , no matter what conventional Internal Combustion Engine your driving, your avg mpg will be about 50% less than the advertised sticker mpg. If you drove a silverado with 15cty and 19hwy, you would probably get about 10mpg or less overall. So be happy!!!, your getting twice or more mpg than many of your neighbors and floridians.
I have sustained drives at 55ish mph at 37-41mpg or better for hundreds of miles in my SS. The boost....i mean vacuum gauge helps, and so does the manual.....
Not that I like hybrids, but you would see significant mileage gains driving one, maybe 40-45+ considering the length of your drives.

I have an '06 2.4 auto and have been using mostly 87 octane. At the beginning of 08, I tried using 93 octane for a couple of thousand miles and saw no improvement in milage. My overall average is 30.3 mpg since the car was new. But I drive with a light foot. I'll get into lockup mode at 40 mph and 1500 rpm. 39K miles on the clock now.

I have the 2.4 and have gotten 24 to 24.5 all summer. Now with winter blend and winter here in Mi. I have dropped to 21 in the same driving. I have used 87 and 91 and never saw a measurable difference in mileage. I think it is a little peppier with the prem. gas but mileage= same.

yeah my average speed which i don't usually reset is between 30 and 37 normally.
My drive to work is 2 miles. If i go anywhere it is within 5 easily, normally within 2 or 3.
I used to live in Kalamazoo Michigan and i had a GMC Jimmy. I got 18-20 mpg around town with it there, and i had a short drive to school, but other things were farther away. When i moved here the same car got 11-12mpg. At first i thought something was going horribly wrong with my car. Then when my wife moved a month after me, and she was getting around 20 (or sometimes below) in the Aveo, i knew it wasn't my car, it was this town.
All depends on where you live. Driving style doesn't effect much where i am. I have tried the go slow from a stop and gradually make my way up to speed and then level it off for optimal mpg, and i have tried the start faster, get up to speed quicker, and level it off, and it's pretty much the same.

Although many have their opinions about my more "hardcore" hypermile techniques; hypermiling through the city take patients and practice. However nothing will make up for such short trips. My average trips were around 11-13 miles, I knew the terrain, timed the lights, and flowed in minimal traffic and towards the 300 mile mark, i even began ICE off coasting..lol.
When I took random (non hardcore hypermile) short 3 mile or less trips, with reverses, and airconditioning, and passengers with average traffic in suburbia sprawl, I usually saw 19-24ish mpg.

but using the remote start now thats a whole different story......lol

I'm going back to 87, after so far using a half of tank of 89 I haven't noticed anything significant. My MPG is currently at 20.4 (lower because these past few days have been hectic, from being a "taxi" around town to speeding to an emergency). The 89 was almost a 20 cent premium over 87 to boot,
