Lets see ya top this. I can have this motor pictured below in two weeks built with off the shelf parts. Its a 738ci big block. 2300hp 1650ft/lbs torque. No blower no turbo, and no nitrous. Anyone can make hp with boost or nitrous. Anyone can tune a car to make hp with a blower and pump gas we have been doing it for years. Run real low CR #'s, back off your timing and tune your AF right to match and bingo. This is where the tuner cars and ricers fail. They have to add boost or nitrous to get the big numbers. If I was to use nitrous I could go with a smaller motor say a 565 and a pro fogger system pumpin out 1650hp. Maybe a 632 with a plate system running 2000hp. http://billbeau.net/738_engine.jpg Hey thats a Scott Shafiroff 738 NITROUS motor. 3 Stages. Around $75,000. You can get one of his 632's with out nitrous 1000hp For $20,000. |
I am referring to anyone that doesn't take our hobby.. nay.. our PASSION seriously. Anyone that thinks one is better than the other while seeing through blindly without taking into mind what OTHER types of engines or modifying there is out there. Is close mindedness that brought about the many wars that have ravaged the planet. Closemindedness brought about the Holocaust and Hitler. Closemindedness brought about 9/11. People so devout in a way of thinking without taking into mind that while other's may have a different belief system they are NOT wrong. This may be a far cry from Muscle VS Tuner.. but it gets the point across. I'm not saying OUR way is better. I appreciate old muscle. BUT I work with what I've got. And what I've got and what I've had are "tuner" cars. Its what I grew up on and what I'll continue to love, and what I'll teach my children on. If my son or daughter want to take up v8's that is there choice. I prefer my small displacement engines.
And.. ONCE AGAIN. This is a SERIOUS discussion on improving the performance on a vehicle we own. The HHR. If you don't want to take part in a positive way then leave it alone and DON'T post. You want to discuss pushrod v8's VS twin cam tuners then fine! Make a new fricking thread. Quit thread jacking these that are trying to get more power. Any other forum I'm on would have split this thread for going so far off topic. This thread is called "Nitrous bottle on an HHR?" not "Help bash me for modding my ride." The start of this thread was to discuss how to add nitrous, what are the benefits, and whether or not someone had placed one on their vehicle. Stick to the topic or butt out and make your own thread. Maybe some bold letters with different colors will convince you how far off topic this has gotten! :thumb: |
back on topic....Is a tune necessary after the nitrous is added? Will it change the A/F ratio enough to hurt the engine. I'd like to add a little power, but don't want to take a chance and damage it.

Okay i 've been working on Nitrous motors since the late 80's , what do you want to know? V-8 Pushrod Ford Hemis too! Know Where nitrous came from? How about WWII German Fighter planes. It is not explosive or flammable. And as someone else mentioned in this thread is not pronounces NOS. Nitrous oxide systems was one of the first companies to make complete systems, but the real secret of the companies was Mike Thermos and Waddy! Their technology was head and shoulders above everyone elses. Nitrous will not hurt your engine as long as you pump enough extra gas to it. Nitrous work by atomizing as it enters the intake. It cools the intake and that increases HP slightly, but the 2 extra oxygen molecules work as a chemical supercharger. Thats where you need the extra fuel because it will lean out the mixture and burn pistons without the fuel. In the old days you didn't want to add nitrous without wide open, but with the newer progressive systems it has solved some of that problem along with the problem off sudden hp being added. The problems of keeping Nitrous at a steady pressure have been eased by bottle warmers, since the times of me in the pits with a hand hand held torch heating nitrous bottles. Intake explosions will still happen if you don't clear nitrous after use before you start the motor up or if you try to purge the system without an external purge. Any Questions?

Step back and take a breath. Your rant was so out of hand you contradicted yourself (see bolded text).
I should never have started this topic in the first place. P.S. Francis Scott Key was American at the time he authored lyrics of the poem that became the Star Spangled Banner. He was born in what is now Maryland.

Horses aside why does a BMW z4 M series outrun a c6 z06 AND a Dodge Viper SRT10 around a track? Its been done and I have the program on dvd to prove it. And your big bad Shelby got its ass whooped on by a Lotus Elise with a Toyota 4 banger in it! How sad is that! :D
Only American car worth the time or money to me is the Ford GT. And its not even American! The only thing truly american on that car is the engine. The wheels are German, the brakes are Italian, the gearbox and body are British, the steering rack is from an Aston Martin Vantage, and the chassis was sorted out by a couple of guys from Lotus. The GT is the best American car on the market right now because ITS about as American as the "National Anthem"... which was written by a Brit.. The only thing you can rely on is "there is no replacement for displacement.." Ya know what then? Take your ignorant 60 year old pushrod motor and drive as fast and as gas guzzling in a straight line as you want. I'll take my chances on a Turbo'd lightweight 4banger that will take a turn and acutally PASS a gas station. Its ignorant people like you that make our hobby look dumb. You stick with your old ways, old motors, and old theories. I'll take my new motors anyday of the week. Now, I'm sorry if this offends anyone's 'patriotic' beliefs but I have tried to be civil. I have tried to have an intelligent debate on this and discuss things in a rational way. Trying to explain why the tuner market is the way it is. To get the bigger numbers from a smaller displacement engine you have to use forced induction. Forced induction IS indeed the replacement for displacement. Some people believe that marrying their cousins is a great way of life too. Are they wrong? Sure! Just because YOU do not understand it doesn't mean that you should shut us down as a true enthusiast. Waste of time you say? Fine. Then DONT waste YOUR time. Let us be. Let us have our 4, 5, and 6 cyl cars. Let us have our nitrous and forced induction. And when you decide to open your eyes to what the next generation of "hot rods" are then I'll see you at the drag strip? Will I be faster than you? Probably not. I own an HHR and I'm happy with what I have to work with. I dont have 20K let alone 2-3K to drop on my motor on a whim. I race what I have and I'm proud and in some cases LOOKED UP TO for what I've got. So, take your backwoods way of thinking and close mindedness someplace else OTHER than a serious discussion on improving performance of these vehicles; and keep your low opinions and slanderous thoughts to yourself. The rest of us would appreciate this. |

And the Francis Scott Key poem called "The Defense of Ft McHenry" which was adapted to English Composer John Stafford Smith's "To Anacreon in Heaven" later became our National Anthem. Yep, I paid attention in school! Our national anthem was a poem and would have never been a anthem without the British Composer's music as his inspiration. So, indeed our national anthem was composed BY a Brit. |

So, indeed our national anthem was composed BY a Brit. And... you clearly said "Only American car worth the time and money" was the Ford GT. By owning an American car, to wit: the HHR, you directly contradict your statement. The content of your post seemed very much to paint you as what could be termed an "import snob", i.e. one who is against all American branded vehicles by default and lavishes praise only upon foreign brands. I'm not saying you are (yet) but your rant certainly seems to show a lean in that direction. |

Or... you know how to google stuff...
How do you know it would never have become the national anthem? It is invalid to second guess history in that manner. There is no way to know. As much as one might like to acknowledge the foreign origins of the musical composition behind the Star Spangled Banner, the meaning of the anthem derives from the lyrics not the accompanying music. And... you clearly said "Only American car worth the time and money" was the Ford GT. By owning an American car, to wit: the HHR, you directly contradict your statement. I'm not saying you are (yet) but your rant certainly seems to show a lean in that direction. I was presented a "challenge" as it were. Supposedly you could only get over 900 horses from an import motor with 100k one off pieces? I proved that theory wrong. Then it went to.. "ok now beat this!" attitudes. That was just downright childish. My 3 year old doesn't even do crap like that. I was presented with some info and when I stepped up and defended, and proved the opposer wrong, I was shut down again. Sure we need forced induction and nitrous! But that IS the replacement for displacement. We may not have tube framed cars making 2000 horses and running 4 second 1/4 miles but we're getting there. Fastest car in the import industry for a while was Adam Saruwatari's RX-7. A 1.3 liter engine! And a rotary none the less! Not a single piston in that bad boy! But still.. you all will find some way of bringing me down on that too! What gives? You have your ways carved in stone and when someone comes along with something that might just challenge that.. Woah boy! LOOK out cause the stuffs gonna hit the fan! This was a decent discussion, even had Bill Beau helping out, until he went off on; and i am parapharasing here, "why you wanna mod a HHR anyway? Its a 4cyl motor!" I love American cars. I prefer, however, imports. Not necessarily Japanese. Mostly European. Cars that take a twist or two. Carrol Shelby even liked the Euros when he made his famous Cobras. Used a sprite look-alike. Tiny euro cabriolet and shoveled a big ol' v8 into it. And it worked. I would prefer my car to be an Ariel Atom, Lotus Exige, or an older Ferrari GTB.. but along my wishlist lies cars like a Hemi 'Cuda, 68 or 69 Camaro, and the mother of all these cars to me is  Bob Johnson's 71 G-Force 'Cuda! So don't take me as some run of the mill American car hating import snob. That is not who I am. And please, ditch this crap and get back on topic or start a new thread! Thanks again! :thumb: |
well i have ran into a slight problem with the nitrous system, that is gonna set me back a bit. the shop that ordered it for me here locally screwed me over on the time it would be in and other stuff so i got to hold off on it a while. but i need to find a good dependible header, and some cams. does anyone know where i can get it?
as far as the whole sport-compact dissers, yea there are alot of stupid peple out there with the stpid stuff on them but, i had a v-6 grand-am gt with intake, header, exhaust, and some really sticky tires and it beat mustangs and camaros left and right at the track but, i did have a 79 camaro z-28 when i turned 16(4 years ago) that was my pride and joy and wish i still had it! it was fast as hell no doubt but once i moved from the country to the city the car couldnt handle the traffic and eventualluy the engine blew. but thats when i got inot the 4 and 6 cylinder engines and never looked back. but it is all in what each individual likes. but just give us smaller engine guys a little respect cause we are doing what we can, with what we got. i love my hhr wether it is fast or slow, i dont care it is fun modding it and driving it. so that is my thoughts. |
"They are assembled in Mexico" Sounds about as broad as it is long. Several perspectives one can argue from, but none that really matter. The marketplace is what it is. "Only American car worth the time or money to me is the Ford GT" "I love American cars" |
