A some what small shot of nitrous ( 50 hp shot ) wouldn't need a fuel system upgrade, premium gas and reduce plug gap would be wise though.

A few guys on Ecotecforum.com and on CobaltSS.net are running 50 and even 75 shot N2O all the time. They run an intake and a 2.25 exhaust and have NO other upgrades. They suggest running 91 octane though. I am purchasing a kit soon from Zex to put on the HHR. Won't use it for another few miles (warranty is almost out) but I used to have N2O on my Prelude and it was definately a LOT of fun. Check those two sites for more info on nitrous though.... www.ecotecforum.com or www.cobaltss.net Both site have 2.4 specific forums along with Nitrous specific forums....

Avg kits are around $500... The one I am going to use is a Zex kits and comes with everything for $499.00 at a local shop. It has a control box that has a sensor that reads the TPS voltage and adjusts to ONLY activate at WOT and has the solenoids for fuel and N2O built into the box. VERY nice kit!
