noise at 1500 - 2000 rpm like a plate / sheet rattle

Hi, I have a 2.4L engine and I notice the engine makes a noise like a plate / sheet rattle noise at 1500 - 2000 idle. It's irregular. The 2008 HHR has only 40 000 miles on it.

Has anyone else detected this sound or an idea where it could come from.

Hey roli,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having this concern with your vehicle. I am not able to guarantee anything, but if you would like I can take a further look into this. Please send us a private message including your VIN, current mileage, and preferred dealership. We look forward to hear from you!

time to ask questions and apply learned experience to the issue at hand, unless somebody wants to get me an Airline ticket!

so, when do you hear this noise, I read your rpm level but are you just driving, braking, turning left or right?
What are the road surface conditions, icy, crowned, potholes??
when did this noise start, after a pot hole hit? or any other circumstances would be of great help

roli - noises are pretty hard to help diagnose over the internet, but we can help point you to a few things to check:

- check the flex joint between the catalytic converter, and the exhaust manifold for leaks - they do wear out, and can make a rattle sound
- check the heat shielding on the exhaust system, especially the catalytic convertor cover
- check the mounts for the air filter box/cover - the rear mount has been known to break and cause a rattling noise (I think it is in the back right side towards the passengers door)

Otherwise, have someone blip the throttle several times with you looking under the hood to determine where it is coming from.

Hopefully others may pop in with a few more suggestions.

I have a noise that is similar to that. It's the heat shield on the exhaust system just past the flex joint near the firewall. There is an upper shield and a lower shield, the lower one is rattling. I'm just waiting for a chance to fix it. It probably rusted free around the hold-down bolt, which is what usually happens.

Welcome to the site. As mentioned above I would look at the air filter bracket. I have had them fail and break. Mine made quite a lot of noise at times. The exhaust flex pipe and shields are a good one also.

Thanks for the advices.
The noise comes when the car is not driving (shift in P or N) engine is running and i accelerate to 1500 -2000 rpm. Sometetimes at lower rpm.
I noticed it the first time when i started the engine and the engine was idling.
It sounds like the noise comes from the passenger side.

heat shields up, Mr. Chekov!! the upper or lower shields would be first point of investigation!!
