Man, this mileage sux...
We are going to see next week, the service rep said they would check it and flash it next week when i take it in to get the recall done.... Parts are to be in Wed.
I know aftermarkets will help with the fuel milage but i think they should at least get what they claim to get.

The best test I took was driving from my house to Fort Saskatchewan (little over 700k distance)
Now the oil was reasonably full, tires are always well balanced and inflated and I always make sure to keep it really well serviced and the weather was great for driving but didnt have any wind at my back. I also cruise control it barely over the speed limit.
Did one fill up half way there but kept track of mileage, gallons used and for CDN gallon measure I came in at just few points about 43 MPG (43.6 imperial measurement to be exact)
Now I could be wrong but 1 Imperial gallon is 1.201 U.S Gallon so it'd work out to about 34.8 MPG highway in US Gallons.
That was still my high as I usually run about 38-39 so I was and am very happy with the fuel economy my HHR has produced. Certainly hope the problems for everyone that is getting poor mileage gets fixed.
A big issue can be from improperly breaking the car in for the first few 1 or 2Km
A friend of mine purchased a Cobalt SS and he tried showing it off from the get go and is getting absolutely terrible mileage. He admitted - and he doesnt like admitting negative things especially his vehicle -- that he made a trip out to Whistler and got about 28 MPG on the highway. Brand new vehicle and he mishandled it from the get go. Can't say I feel sorry for him.

Mileage update
Well, the HHR came out of winter hibernation recently and went through it's first tankful.
Combination of city and highway driving, along with some idling (I work on the computer in it) and the DIC said 26.5 and when I calculated it manually it was 26.7. Sounds pretty close to me.
This is actually the worst mileage since I have owned it, but it also is cold weather right now. I bought it in the summer.
We'll have to see what the next couple of tanks do.
I forgot how much fun this thing is!!

I just arrived to upstat NY from Florida. Filled up in Melbourne, drove to exit 119 in SC for next tankfull, then to Opal Va for next tankfull, and arrived in Binghamton, NY ~1300 miles averaging between 33-34 mpg. 87 octane in 2.4L auto. I'm filling up after 480 miles. I still have 1/4 tank left. Rain and cold here today.
My trip to Texas
My Hhr was pretty consistent. I drove from Midland, MI to Austin, TX round trip. I put 91 to 93 octane in the car every time and I filled up about five to ten miles after the low fuel light came on. I was averaging 400 to 435 miles each fill up. I was averaging 25-27 miles per gallon on the computer. The best gas mileage I have seen was going from Midland, MI to Big Rapids, MI doing 55mph to 60mph the whole way. This particular trip I was getting 33mpg according to the tell tale computer.
Mine was getting around 21.8 for daily drives, and around 26 for highway, so I checked tire pressure. I didn't check it until now, because I assumed the dealership would have done that....apparently someone there is dyslexic or something, because they were filled to 25 instead of 35.I filled to 35, and I'll hopefully see a big difference. Filled up, reset, and drove to bowling league lastnight. Got around 25 on up and down back road driving. MUCH better so far. Hope it stays that way.

Not even 2 years old yet and I have just hit 42000 miles. I went to work for a company that sent me all over creation for work (I'm glad that's over now!) and here's what I have to say about 40000 miles:
First, I live in northern California which is hardly the most challenging weather to drive in and the performance has been spectacular. I have a manual 2.4 from '06 and my MPG on average is around 27.3. Mostly it's highway miles where I get up to 30 MPG and driving around the city gets me in the 23-24 range.
I use synthetic motor oil and change it myself around every 3000. The range for me in the system has never dropped below 10% and I check my tire pressure 2x a month. I've also replaced the air filter twice, which is actually a chore and makes me remember my '80 Camaro with fondness because the filter was right on top.
I also wonder why the oil filter costs so much, there's nothing to it.
I had a +70 mph flat and it was very controllable to get to the side of the road.
The windshield thermal cracked and Chevy gladly replaced it. 3 weeks later a rock hit it and cracked it again.
It's been broken into twice, both times when I went into San Francisco which seems to be going downhill the past couple of years (like the Giants!).
I've never been tempted to upgrade the sound system.
I'm all too glad I got the chrome package.
Older fellas friggin' love this car and I bet a couple of them went out and bought it after I gave them the tour and told them how much it was. Where's my commission Chevy?
Going to Tahoe made me realize how much better these cars perform on the flat lands at sea level. Up in the altitudes I feel performance was diminished about 25% and cold weather probably had something to do with it but not as much as mountains and altitudes. I did see a bunch of HHR's up there though.
Going in for the recall service I saw that they had a black '08 SS on the lot. I'm tempted to ask for a test drive...
Overall it's the best car I have ever owned. My only criticism is they could have made the windshield about 6" taller.
