Ok, This might sound strange..
I am awaiting a CGS CAI. Today I was under the hood looking around and was trying to get some ideas for a different oil cap.
How did you guys that have CGS remove the oil filler "neck" ?
Ok now the weird part. While I had the cap off, I took a sniff of it. It smells of gasoline!. Looking farther, I decided to do the same with the oil dipstick. It smells like gas too. Is this normal because, if so, it sure as hell doesnt seem right. Car has 2400 miles on it and so far has not burned a drop of oil.
Most of you know that I also have a really dirty tailpipe, lots of black stuff in it. The dealer scanned the car and found nothing. Then proceeds to tell me that it is a result of the detergent in the gas. I feel that the car is running rich and the smell on the oil cap and dipstick tends to validate this.I call Bull**** here. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Don

So I take it doesnt twist on like the cap does. Ok cool. So if that's the case, wouldnt an oil cap that was basically a rubber plug work? I will just wiggle the neck out right?......Kenny go sniff ya cap man!

The oil filler neck is twisted on, just like the cap. You can use the same cap that fits on it directly on the valve cover, or you can go with an aftermarket one. I got one that says Mobil 1 on it-got it at the Chevy parts counter.

It should not smell like fuel. You need to get a free oil sample kit from Blackstone labs or other, obtain a sample from your engine and send it in for analysis. They check for fuel dilution of the oil when they test it.
The smell of used engine oil is more like the way car exhaust used to smell in the days before emission controls. That is because the oil takes on the blow-by gasses during operation (over time) and the blow-by gasses (also known as combustion by-products) have not hit the catalytic converter nor been recirculated by the EGR yet so they're untreated combustion exhaust gas and that's why the oil takes on a slight smell similar to how "old school" car exhaust used to smell. But it shouldn't smell like raw gasoline.
This taken in combo with the apparent excess carbon on your tail pipe on a car with so few miles seem to point to a problem. If, that is, it really is a gasoline smell you are smelling when sniffing the oil.

I apologize for being incorrect as to how the oil neck goes on. I just put mine back on the other day and I guess I didn't pay attention to how I did it. You think after changing it 3 or 4 times I would member. No harm no foul...
