Replace Turtle Muffler with straight pipe?

I want a better, deeper sound along with maybe some performance gains out of my HHR. Has anyone just took the muffler off and replaced it with a straight pipe? And if so, what was the sound like? After seeing some of the issues people have had with check engine lights after installing cold air intakes, I might stay away from that mod for now... but would like to free up the exhaust and make it sound deeper and better.. any ideas?

Thanks

Guess that rules that out then... definately dont want to sound like a rice racer. I see some go with the IMCO muffler to get the sound they want. Which model of IMCO muffler do they use?

2.2 = Imco T909
2.4 = Imco T924

Magnaflow catback seems to be a fav here as well.

I think GDZHHR and someone else, ran straight exhaust but retained just the converter.....and stated it was to loud inside the vehicle. Might be mistaken though.

IMO, definitely need some type of muffler.

get a magnaflow. I have one installed on my 2004 honda civic and it does not sound like a ''rice racer''. I cant stand that loud crappy noise that some guys think is cool...its just annoying. My car sounds actually pretty nice and i got lots of positive compliments from friends and co-workers as i drove away or gave them a ride. Go to the magnaflow website and do a search for your application and you can hear the muffler sound clip.

Put an IMCO T-909 on our LS over 18 Months ago. Love the way it sounds, and it doesn't drone inside the HHR. And it doesn't sound a bit like any Moped that I've ever heard! ??
