Here is what I have so far. I used steel tubing. Had to drill it out for the correct diameter to slide over the stock shaft. Then used 1/4-20 threaded rod as the plunger and drilled and tapped the push button on top of the skull head. The threaded rod is noisy sliding through the tube so I may change that

My shift knob is the plunger I don't have the button on the top, my fist attempt was with a 1/4 bolt and I changed it to the 3/8 to stop the rattleing.

Good job guys. :thumb:
Glad to see more autos with custom shifters. I am gonna build a few more so I can switch 'em out. You can also use aluminum tubing, or whatever you prefer. I have a few ideas to change it up a bit, some near, some far. Also need to upgrade my shifter assembly to a newer model, so I can get that storage bin. Mine is an 07, so no storage & no shift boot. |
Same here, '07, no leather boot, no storage bin! While I had my shifter off yesterday to change the PRNDIL bulb, I inspected the area that commonly breaks and there did not seem to be any stress in that pin area, I did take the time to squirt some white lithium grease in there to lube the mechanism.

@Lethal
Let us know how that install goes. I'd like to add the same shifter knob to my 09 LT with the leather boot...that is if I can figure out how to get the original off? As I understand it (based on searching these forums) the boot turns a 1/4-1/2 turn clockwise, slides down and there is an inner back ring that also turns 1/2 turn to expose a set screw. I'm guessing after that the sickspeed adapter just slides over the shaft and is set screwed in place? Then again I may be oversimplifying it and be WAY off. Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated. |

you have the removal of the stock shift knob correct. fairly easy. I emailed the vendor who sells the sickspeed knob and asked him if it will definitely fit the HHR like his add claims. He said it would. I got it last night and it will not work without adding a plunger piece. So I cut a piece of wood dowl about 1.5 inches. Then I got it to work. It looks good but feels a little loose. I ordered an aftermarket shifter boot that will cover the adapter better. I will post pics when I get that installed.
