Disappointed
The sunpass for the turnpike system fits nicely behind the rearview mirror. It is so unnoticable there, I have to look behind the mirror to make sure it is in place when approaching the toll booth.
Then I guess I'm in heaven coming from a Mustang.
I loved the car but it had a tiny glove box, a tint under armrest area (but it was deep), and you had to have a half hour fight in the parking lot with a case of beer just to make it fit in the trunk.
I mainly bought the HHR because of its room and storage space.
I use the rear smugler's compartments all the time
My transponder stays in the dash compartment until I need it... then it comes out... it's only at arm's length so it's not that big of a deal... and I'm the same way, I would re-mount it to the windshield but I don't want that thing to be what I (or others) get focused on for an otherwise clean line.
I didn't explore all the storage when I bought mine. The 'up-front' storage is a little light to be honest. It doesn't bother me though. The glove box could stand to be a little deeper, it barely holds the manual, let alone maps... so I bought a small GPS
You can't fit more than a half dozen or so CDs in full sized cases between the doors... so I'll have to make a few MP3 discs I guess...
It's light compared to vehicles it's size... but it's totally managable.

My Matrix had a boatload of compartments compared to the HHR......center console would have been nice but not a deal breaker...I do love the center console in the dash..that does hold quite a bit but stuff does get hot in there.
My Ez Pass is where jx put his...can't see it while in the car but does not look too good from the outside..the black it is mounted on is not as dark as other cars

On my recentr trip to Kansas, I wanted to have everything I needed at arms reach fro the two of us riding up front and my grandson in the back. My boyfriend and I found ourselves using the pockets in the doors for things that we needed easily accessible.
I tend to agree with Lone Ranger to a point. We tend to carry way to much in our HHR's and I'm definitely guilty of that one. I've got a waterproof bag that I carry in the cargo area that has all my detail supplies and stuff I haven't even touched in months. Guess I figure since the bag is back there, I may as well fill it up with stuff.

I've been thinking about picking up an I/EZ Pass now that the Indiana and Illinois authorities have agreed on a compromise...but hate to have to stick it behind the rear view mirror.
I for one would love to see some pictures of your installatiion behind the center dash compartment lid. Does the transponder have any problems communicating with the governmental receiver at toll locations? The last thing I need is to enter a bureaucratic maze over unpaid tolls. -Sam

I had also painted the holder that sticks to the windshield, so it still doesn't look that far out of place, even from the outside.
I agree on storage, BUT

The storage in the HHR can be somewhat limited for CDs and such, what I did was I found an MP3 player that holds up to 500 or more songs. Currently I placed 21 disc on it, and still have room for about 20 more disc. Thats a L O T of songs. Of cours like many, I went from a mini van to the HHR. I was going to get another used mini van but the prices are outrageous for a decent yr, and no real warranty to boot. I also figure since my youngest son is older, I won't be bringing many things back with us when I pick him up in PA to bring out to NE for the summer. But then he drives now, and plans on joining the service in the future. So, I just do not need a mini van for a personal vehicle anymore. And I find that when I have a Vetrernarians appt, for my dogs, 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs, and one mixed breed, they all fit in just fine. Love the mpg I am getting since for now Nebraska has the highest prices in the nation.
Besides all the above, I think I am reliveing my youth, and have what I call the street rod look I have always wanted, only I get better gas milage.
