TK's pic makes the back lite setup look like it came from a 1960-1964 Corvair.Even so,I still kinda like it.
That would be a rather involved conversion to do because of having to make a jumper harness to go into the gate and all of the related hole drilling and sealing against water and dirt intrusion. Then you have to consider altering the outer gate panel to give it a slightly raised housing to match the quarter panel and figuring out a way to properly secure the light into the gate.

I was feeling the Corvair in it too, thats funny. If you used 1950 Pontiac tail lights, they fit the stock hole and they would flush mount on the gate. As far as wiring, there is already a harness at the top of the hatch for the hatch switch and license light. So it would be pretty easy to route some new wires into the hatch.

Horizontal attitude

When you said horizontal tail lights this popped up in my mind:

Or this

I wanted to put something in the bumper without having to alter the bumper...those lousy "warts" prevent you from placing any lights in there without significant surgery. I think Impala or Corvette tails in the bumper would look good...photochop anyone?

Thumbs up Yes TkHHR!

Yep, TkHHR, that is exactly what I was talking about. It just looks right on there to me. I think it makes the rear of the look less tall and skinny. I am sure Brian had a reason to design it that way, but I think the horizontal looks better. I like them aligned liked you showed.....with the upper lights. Great PhotoShop job. God Bless, Marc

Was it the 62' that had the triple lights on each side? I think that would look good if you could get the placement right, but the HHR isn't quite wide enough or low enough to pull it off. What I really liked was the 59' cat's eye tail lights.

58 had three/side, skipped 59, 61,62,63,64,65 had three/side, skipped 66 & 67, then 68,69,70 all had three again.

In my haste, I forgot the 1960...three per side there, too. Lesser models (Biscayne, Bel Air) had two per side.

After 1970, not 100% sure which years had what, not much into post 1970 full-sizers.

I'm a bit of a full-size Chevy buff, since I own one
