I think you need to get new microfiber or better. terry will scratch faster than microfiber.

 

I own a set of the OEM 17 inch polished 2LT rims.

I clean with simple soap and water on my rims. In fact, I pre-mix a mild solution of soap and water in a spray bottle kept in my garage for wheel cleaning.

For polishing, I use a non-abrasive cleaner wax a couple time a year. No scratches at all.

I clean mine when I wash the car and then after I clean and armour all the tires I go back with window cleaner and a paper towel. Good Bounty paper towels and no scratches yet to speak of.

 

As others have said, I use the same wax on the rims that I do the paint, which is Meguiars NXT 2.0, and I always use microfiber cloth. You can buy a 3 pack of Meguiars MF towels at most auto parts stores for a pretty good price, and they are very soft. If you have any doubts if a cloth will scratch, take an unburned CD and wipe it with the cloth. If it doesn't scratch the CD, it won't scratch your paint. You are correct that the rims scratch very easily. I have found mine scratch just from daily driving. What I use to get those out is Meguiars Mirror Glaze #9 Pro Swirl Remover. I don't blame you for getting the polished 17" rims. When they are clean, they really stand out IMO.

 

Hope you're doin well with your HHR. I haven't been on the site in a while, but think I remember we got our HHR's at about the same time. I think I mainly do what everyone else is saying... just wash as regular and wax like they are painted. Hope the winter didn't do too much damage to your baby :)

Usually, in the fall when my rims come off the HHR, I use a buffer and polish. Otherwise I just keep them waxed...I did use the bullet polish on them the other day and it did make them shine nicely

 

I wash them like they were my hood.
I dry them the same way
I wax them the same way
