I have the power lift gate on my Ford Flex. Never missed not having one on my HHR.
Putting the power lift struts on the HHR would just be a small part of the whole install. You would need wiring from the BCM. Maybe a control button on the dash. And a separate key fob maybe ? Or a new GM fob with an extra button for the power gate.

Then there’s the safety aspect, a sensor system to prevent opening while driving. To ensure it’s closed . No way to load those parameters into the BCM

 

On the few I've researched, this has been accomplished by only allowing operation when the vehicle is in Park or the Parking brake is set.

The hydraulic motors that are used to turn the wheels of dozers are radial actuators. Rack and pinion steering is lateral actuator. A screw thread is a linear actuator. A hydraulic ram is a linear actuator. The stepper motor that drives the blend door in your AC system is a radial actuator.

 

So the picture that fadtsuv posted is not a linear actuator, since there is no rotary being converted to linear.

 

You’re struggling with the actuator and that’s the easy part. For closing with electric actuators you need a whole different kind of latch. Good luck with that.
