Second chrome grill
 

About 1 1/2 years ago I had my grill sprayed chromed.

The chrome started to chip/flake off. Might have been the way it was done, road sand or it didn't adhere well to the type of plastic the grill is made of.
So I bought this:

First off I lucked out with the price. It's a bolt on over lay grill. Quality looks very good and comes with all the necessary hardware. I found it easier to remove the grill shell to do the install. You have to apply some pressure on the part to start the wing nut onto the stud on the grill and it"s easier to center in the opening.
The large bottom piece used the supplied flat and lock washers and the top only used the wing nut, reason being the large piece had more flex to it.
Both pieces used the large mounting plate also. It's a rectangle plate with a slotted hole in it.
The only thing that I didn't care for was the outside lower corner of the large piece was slightly raised and not making contact the the OEM grill. It wasn't much at all but being me I took a very small style tie rap (zip tie) and pulled it in to my liking. You would have to really look to see it.

I took a picture of it and put it in my album on this forum. Have to read the "How To" again so I can post it here.
Just got a new computer with Windows 10 and I'm still fumbling around trying to get use to somethings with it.

Still not to bad:

LEFT click on the thumbnail to get a full size image
RIGHT click on the FULL SIZE image
LEFT click on save IMAGE location, or something like that; different browsers use different words.
Then go back to your post and left click on the yellow mountain icon
Right click in the dialog box and choose paste.


Done.

Be sure to rinse the salt off regularly or it will pit.

Have you had experience with this type of grill ?
Or are you saying it's "junk".
By the way wrote down your steps for next time.

I’ve had several aftermarket grilles, from different companies and they all rusted a bit if I didn’t keep them clean .

No opinion on the grill, just stainless pits from salt and chlorine.

I just used a magnet on it and it doesn't stick. The grill is chrome plated also, not just bare metal.
I use the car all year long in all weather. Time will tell.

He-He; fits 2006-2010 HHR (as long as you have a 2008-2010 SS). Too much time on my hands today.

Chrome plating stainless is odd, but OK I guess. I guess guarding against my warning.

I'm researching it now. It might be nickel plated.

I'm leaning towards this process ElectroLESS Nickel plating.

Stainless, nickel, no metal is immune to corrosion. What are the mounting studs made from? If they're stainless, you may want to upgrade to stainless nuts to avoid galvanic corrosion. If they're some other metal, then...

I know you'll keep it clean, and that will go a long way towards preventing corrosion. Looks nice!
