Those gold bowties

I have seen these replaced with other colours and I have seen others with decals over them. I would like to know if anyone tried painting them and what the resulting outcome was like. Were they painted on the outside surface or removed and painted on the inside surface? I thought I read somewhere that the gold color was due to a foil like material on the inside....maybe be very wrong on that point. I so very much dislike that gold colour on most HHR colors except maybe sandstone.

All input is much appreciated.

I was of course referring to the one on the front grill and the one on the back liftgate. The ones on the wheels have to go too though....

I'm still waiting for my dealership to call me and tell me the can of paint I ordered is in. It's been almost a month now since I ordered it.

You can replace them with polished billet aluminum bowties available at most auto parts stores....

That's my input!

What paint? Dark Metallic Silver? I went right down to the local body shop paint supply house and had them mix me up a quart. Only $17 and some change. Repainted my rear bumper cover (after it was damaged), and still have plenty left for other projects.

I painted mine with "krylon fusion". I would post the pic but don't know how. It is in my photo gallery, I painted it black and removed the rear wiper. it worked great. If I didn't tell you it was painted you wouldn't know even if you were up close, real nice touch, the black against the chrome.

I've had pretty good luck with color-matching mine.

I did took off both bowties using a nylon line. There are a couple of posts but by the time you get to them on each side you should be ok. I think if i did it not that its much warmer out it might have been easier too.

I did however mess up the chrome edge slightly, no one but me would notice, so I got two new ones from my dealer. Less than $20 each.

I used a very fine sandpaper, then a anhesion promoter. I did two coats. Then I did three coats of the color. 20 minutes between each coat. After that dried completely I did three coats of clear coat for protection.

The only place it has come off was on the chrome edge/lower section.

I am going to tape this area off on the new set.

I like the look much better than the gold.

I had custom badges made fot the centercaps and also the steering wheel.

No more gold bowties for me!!

Hope this helps.

Yup, a 6.5 oz. aerosol can of DMS paint direct from GM. It cost $9.75 after tax. I called my dealership last weekend and it still wasn't in. I'll try again on Monday. My bowties are going to be color matched.

Odered my first batch from the dealer too.

Didn't have enough to do other things I was working on and needed more. Duplicolor had a perfect match and it was 1/2 the cost. Plus it was full-size cans.
