'Tinted' my grill
'Tinted' my grill
I was wandering through Meijer's and found a product that tints chrome plating much like Nite Shades tints taillights. It from Dupli-Color, and it's called Shadow.
I know that Dupli-Color isn't exactly PPG quality, but the effect it promised was what I was looking for- a black 'anodized' type finish. So, I ponied up the $16.99 and went home to try it out.
It works like Nite Shades in that it is a rather thin coating, and multiple coats produce a darker color. Once you have the level of tint you desire, you then spray several coats of clear.
My grill already had a few rock chips, so if it didn't turn out it wasn't a great loss.
So, here's how it came out.....

The Bowtie was blacked out using Mono-Kote, which is a mylar self adhesive sheet usually used on R/C airplanes. You apply it using a hair dryer to form it to the surface, and it is very durable (and difficult to remove).

Yes, I'm rather pleased with the outcome, to be honest I wasn't expecting much from Dupli-Color, I've had problems with their products in the past (Their version of Chromallusion paint is very difficult to get a decent 'deep' look to the shine)
I actually was considering using Nite Shades on the grille, but a test spray on the backside showed that it would not adhere, it just pooled and ran when I picked up the grille after an hour.
I have the satin grille, a chrome grille would probably be even shinier. Any one who does this should remove all the bracketry from the rear of the grille, it makes it easier to handle. The directions say to leave a 1/2 hour between coats, I recommend an hour as it got a little splotchy looking if I resprayed after a half hour.
<edit> I'm wondering how it would look if I sprayed the 'chrome' in the headlights with this.....?

I think autozone sells stuff similar to it but in different colors.. I thought about doing my headlights with the red one.
This is the stuff I am talking about..

(bling bling!)The one I used comes with a clearcoat, might help with the rock chips.
