VHT Caliper Paint

Never understood while Chevy Brembo Pimps the front calipers but leaves the rears hangin out like the abused, souless, ginger, step child.

So off with the wheel and here's what we have. Might as well get to it while it's still rust free.

Now granted, the true and right way to do this is to remove the entire assembly and paint off the car. However, I just don't think it's needed. Further, then if I went that far, I would have them powder coated, rebuilt, then re-installed. Nope... we continue...

First I cleaned it with some simple green, then some brake clean.

Dried real good between each of those steps as well as blow dried with the air compressor. Then I taped up all the important bits like hoses, side covers, and threads.

Made my very own "paint booth"

3 coats, 10 mins apart

Cleaned up the rotor surface with some thinner and a piece of scotchbrite.

You'll notice I did the piece of the rotor center that is shown on my SS rims as well as the top edge of the rotor which I also see.

Mucho better!

Lettin it "cure" over night and then will burn off any residue in first drive.

Thanks. I like it. Luckily the small effect I get from it was ok because it wasn't much of a job anyway. Maybe 1-1.5 hour. That included from pulling out jack to everything put away. Just took it nice and slow.

Looks good! I did the calipers on ours when we did the Viper upgrade. I opted for the brush on paint. If you add just a small amount of thinner into the can it goes on my smoother and dries faster. I went with the red because I wanted it to show. Did the edges and center of the rotor with black just to keep them from rusting.

Chris- Looks good..

I also brushed mine in RED with Eastwoods' Ceramic Hi-Temp paint. I got a quart for less than the caliper kit paint costs.
And it flows out just like it was sprayed..

Now the wife wants her car done too...

How much of the paint was left in the can?
Exactly what Im going to do, except I got the VHT blue. However I am also changing the front pads/rotors and rear shoes at the same time (non-SS) so I will paint the calipers with the rotors off to get the other side. Im guessing I just need to additionally tape off the piston. Ill also be painting the rear drums.
Also, I was considering painting the entire rotor including vents and using the old pads a bit to wear the paint off the braking surface, I hate the rust that forms on the small areas the pads dont rub. Good idea you think, or not?

Prod-

Not exactly sure who you are asking ?

But I have about 5/8 of the quart remaining.. Part I like is it's not a mixed paint, that goes bad..

prod... it barely took any spray from the can. One can should do all of what you want.

Of the tiny can that came in the VHT brush-on kit I used, you could hardly tell anything had been used after doing both front calipers. And I did take the calipers off and painted them all around. I can see this can last forever and doing all the brake calipers I ever want to do.

For your other questions, I took the caliper mounts off and hung them up so I could get all sides of them good. I taped of the rubber boots so as not to get paint on them. For the actual calipers I just used S-hooks and hung them from the springs. I would paint one side and then turn them to paint the other. For part of the painting I just had to hold them up by the S-hook so I could turn it where I wanted. The only thing I taped up on the caliper was the bleeder. I just painted around the end of the brake line. I used a 1" horsehair brush. The tiny brush that comes in the brush-on kit is worthless. I didn't paint anything inside the caliper in the piston area at all. No need. It doesn't show and it doesn't rust. I went back a couple of days later and just took the wheel off and touched up any areas I saw that needed it. The only thing I wish I had done, and will do next time I have the wheels off, is paint the hub where it has surface rust on it. It only shows when the wheel is off but I know it is there!

I also painted the edge and cap of the rotor because I hate to see the rust too. I didn't have to but I taped off the pad surface before I painted. I know the pads would have scuffed the paint off but I didn't want all of the paint flakes on my new pads on flying onto my newly painted rotors. I did the rotor in black because the hat is so big on the Viper rotor. I thought the red could be overbearing. When we take the rear apart to start on the Viper discs on the rear, I will paint the shoes black so they will look pretty until they are replaced.
