Vinyl to cover bowties
Im wanting to make the bowties on my new HHR red.
I Would prefer not to paint them (in case I decide I dont like the the vinyl can be taken off) Has anybody tried this? Is there a vinyl that would be better for it? pre-cuts? any help is appreciated. Thanks! |
Been done alot.
Search maybe for bow tie overlays. :thumb: Also search ebay for them, or try a local sign shop. |
be aware that most of the bow tie over lays do not cover the whole thing. you will see the edges due to the 3D nature of the badge. To me this is unacceptable. You might try a product cald platidip.
can get it in lots of colors. spray it on don't like it? peal it off. |

I thought they worked good, got mine at reflective concepts.
|
I was thinking about just getting a sheet maybe and putting it on then cutting off around the edges of it.
maybe for the wheels and steering wheel getting pre-cut. I thought plastidip only came in black. |
The spray plastic comes in many colors, not just black.

It looks like vinyl will be the easier way to go with the emblems on the hood and rear hatch.
Where did you get yours SS fan? |
I was thinking about getting something like this and just cut around the logo
This may be easier said than done. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cardinal-Red...ht_1027wt_1037 |
That'd be the easiest route..sheet of vinyl..
As to the wheels & steerin wheel gold tone bow ties, I just polished the gold tone off them.. Looks cleaner, didn't care for the gold.. |
I would like to do red bow ties all around. Front, rear, wheels, and steering wheel.
Vinyl seems like it will be the easiest plus its removable. Plastidip is the second option but Im not sure about how much masking it would take to do so. I would prefer to just leave everything on the car while doing it. Thinking these for the wheels and steering wheel http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-HH...ht_1827wt_1270 I dig these a lot as well. Havent decided if I would like these or just solid red. Problem with these I would assume is that they wouldnt cover the whole bow tie http://www.ebay.com/itm/HHR-BOWTIE-O...#ht_500wt_1287 |

After coming home from a car show several years ago disgusted with the prices they were commanding for cut vinyl graphics, I spent over a grand just to save twenty and purchased two cutters; yea I know it makes no sense.
This front Bowtie had an issue with the gold scaling off the backside. Vinyl just did not seem like a solution; so after media blasting the logo down to nuthin more than a textured tinted piece of plastic, sprayed it with a Hyundai silver (cause that's what we had on hand) and was left with this. Up close and in person it almost has a hammered appearance from the aluminium oxide abrasion. http://www.vinylgrafixdesigns.com/0d2636c0.jpg That's not to say I don't think vinyl has it's place if I ever find it. Here's one I'm trying out & will probably decide is too cheezy even for me. http://www.vinylgrafixdesigns.com/0d00c520.jpg |
I have $12 invested and the guy sent 4 of them in case I messed up with the install..that is a to my door price. Vinyl can be very expensive for sure. Had it not turned out like I hoped for..I wasn't out much. Is it possible to get the gold off the back and used a different color from behind?

They are backed with silver... The gold color comes from the amber plastic. |

The gold appeared to be painted on the backside and it had a shine to it like chrome paint. Application of aluminium oxide at 100 psi removed all of it in no time. Suppose one could repaint the backside and I briefly pondered that; in my case, had also blasted the front just because I didn't use xtra effort to mask it off and it was then even less transparent. Can't think of any method for gold removal from the bowtie that won't cloud the plastic to some degree. |
I own a sign shop and a piece of vinyl the size you need cost about 15 cents. Go to your local sign shop and ask them if you can look through their scraps for a small piece. Tell them you'll give them a buck or two. Squeegee it in place with a credit card and trim it with an exacto knife. It's really easy and cheap.
