And the ones that do allow it have limits. In Missouri its 35% for the front. I just got a ticket for mine. I did 20% and when they put their little meter on it they came up as 14%. I guess what the factory put on them made them even darker. Makes sense.
What bites is that its an appearance ticket, I can't just pay the fine!

Custom Tint on mine. Legal % tint, and I made a template of flames, which the tint person did in bronze tint. Very subtle from the outside, cool from inside!!! There are are some flames in my sun-roof also, but would not show up in pictures.
Local tint people should be able to tell you what is legal!!!
Mine costs $185, the two fronts with flames, a windshield strip, and some flames in the sun-roof!!
Later,
Mark

According to the Official CHP (California Highway Patrol) website:
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:
However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.
That really sucks!
