Maybe I'm way off here, but this problem seems rather odd to me.

I have an 06 LT with the stock CD/mp3 player. First thing in the morning, it will play CDs perfectly for about 10 minutes and then start skipping and eventually (within 2 or 3 minutes) becomes unlistenable.

If I leave it for 8 hours or so, it will resume at the same point (i.e. where it was skipping) and be good for about 10 minutes and then the problem starts again.

I've tried with regular store bought CDs and home-burned mp3 disks with no change in behaviour. I've also put the very same discs into another vehicle and had no problems with playback so I've very confident it's an issue with the player itself.

I'm not sure it's worth replacing (with all the rigmarole of getting it re-programmed etc) so I may just switch to an mp3 player via the AUX port but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on whether this can be fixed.

I've tried one of those discs with the little brush attached that's supposed to clean the lens and it did nothing.

I do have a couple of cats so it's entirely possible it's gummed up with enough hair to make a wig but the problem as I can see it is somehow related to heat.

The behaviour I've laid out in this email is as regular as clockwork - it's been repeatable 5 days running now.

Also, is it possible to remove the front fascia that covers the CD player without any special tools and in a way that won't look horrific afterwards?

 

It's broke! No easy fix. Aftermarket with the correct adapters you won't need a TechII to install.

Have you thought about taking it to a dealership to have it looked at?

I haven't. I figured it's either something I fix myself or do without. The cost of 1 hours labour is more than I want to pay to resolve this.
