Alternator Feedback

Hello,

I am a technician at a Chevy Dealer looking for some assistance.

Looking for some input from owners who have Onstar. I am getting feedback only when connected to Onstar, compared it to 2 others and they both did it but it doesn't seem right and no other model I have found does it either. HHR's with Onstar are so few and far between here I have nothing to compare to.

Sorry I can't help. Have OnStar, but not a subscriber.

I do not really use it a lot but I have noticed there to be a quiet whining background noise, if that's what you are talking about.

Yeah mine sounds like a bad ground whine with the onstar. It's barely noticable without the onstar.

I use the hands-free a lot and hear the whine all the time. It's real bad when accelerating, it seems like a bad ground to bed to me.

I have it all-premium radio with XM and OnStar. I never really noticed the whine until I put in a different Pioneer head with the Metra interface and a switch to Sirius. I called Metra and the technician there said that all of the HHR's he saw had the alternator noise, and that changing radios and using the factory amp like I did only makes it worse. He said that the remedy is to either use the amp in the aftermarket radio or use a different amplifier, both requiring a different Metra interface. I noticed that with the gain on the Metra interface turned down, the whine is less noticible but you lose loudness. I plan on running all new wires to my speakers then trying the head amp. But first I need to buy the other interface then I will sell my old one.

To be perfectly honest, I never noticed any either with the stock setup. Perhaps the Metra tech I spoke with has more sensitive hearing than I do. But I sure notice it now

My wife's whine drowns out everything including road noise, so I don't hear a thing
