Thumbs up Found a carputer site for ya.

Has anyone seen this site? Computers for your car. I love the power supplies they have that automagicly shutdown your computer correctly when you turn off your car. http://www.mini-box.com/site/index.html

Inexpensive touchscreens also.

For gps software look into copilot stuff. http://www.alk.com/

I used copilot truck when I was driving a big rig. Never had any issues with it. A little pricey though.

Interesting stuff. We used to have a member who installed a carputer in his HHR. Haven't heard from him in a while. I would like to see someone hook one of these units to an HHR and see how practical it is.

i dont know, i had this in mind a while back but for the money you're going to spend for a carputer, plus messy wiring, plus fabricating a holding mount for the touchscreen the time and cost with be more than buying an avic-d3 that has the same options.

Yea.. but I've seen carputers installed in vehicles on "Pimp my Ride," and they look like they would be pretty cool. You can load songs into it, just like a computer. You can have your car's "vitals" wired to show on the screen. A lot of possibilities....

With a 160 gig hard drive you could have 32000 mp3's stored for playing. They have a the ability to have four IDE drives and two SATA drives. So you could have more than a million MP3's and still have room for a gps program, a program to look at your cars stats, and run a video cam. It has a pcmcia slot so you could slide in a wireless card while at starbucks and cruise the internet.

Man the possibilities :)

I look forward to seeing your setup. This may be something for a long-term project...

for a project like that you better make sure you keep your car and dont ever plan on selling it. With all the wirings and everything you need to do to make the installation look clean, removing all that from your car would be a b***h. It will take way too long to get a carputer set up the way you like and will take more than $1k to get all the software needed for GPS, hardware etc. Other than that if I wanted to check out the internet while at starbucks why would I want to browse from a 6.5" screen if I can connect with my 15" laptop instead?

If you wanted music get yourself an ipod 80gb and plug that into an avic d3. At least you can take your music with you...

if your heart is set on getting a carputer this would be a better option. Its an all-in-one without the hassle of running a pc in your trunk, running wires etc.

click here for the detail page.

This is the base model running for $2k plus. If you want a bigger hd, more usb ports, xm etc it will run you almost $3k.

I use a laptop with a external 7" display. Here is a pic of the display when I had it in my big rig.
