Install question

I have a brand new head unit that has been sitting in my garage so I checked and it will fit the car but the installer said I would need a 150.00 module to make the steering wheel controls work. Question is if I bought a new one would I still need the module?

I think the wiring adapter my guys offered me was $35 back when I installed in my LT.
I didn't have the steering wheel controls so I passed.
