Then sound quality suffers, and you also have the noise and resistance issue that goes through the cable that goes to the headunit.
The only way it would work is if you used an Ipod and had a HU that supported the cable to hook up to the data port on the bottom of the Ipod. Using the headphone jack on an MP3 player with an AUX cable does not produce optimum sound.

 

Damn, you guys are making me want to get back in the game. I had a stereo shop back in the late 80's and early 90's, and competed in NACA and TOW, and then IASCA. My personal car at the time was a Ford Festiva and I concentrated on TOW in it. 12 Punch 15's and 4 HiFonics Boltar 400w amps, all powered by a Caterpillar (Heavy Equipment) battery and on board charging system. It went 145db. Things have certainly changed!

 

Im talking about an actual mp3 head unit that has a built in hard drive where you can rip songs onto it via usb.

 

That'll work, I will be using a Kenwood Excelon 991 with a harddrive and USB thumbdrive input.
But it is not legal in competition. You have to use the official disc. At least at multi point shows you do.

The GTI660's are awesome! I had the Focal Be components and the JBLs are just...better. The Focals cost me $4000 and they came out of the HHR with VERY little regret...other than money wasted. The GTI's aren't cheap ($3000+/- at retail), but it just goes to show what a difference there is even at the stratosphere priced components. Build quality is what you'd expect from both sets (think "Rolex"), but the sound from the sets are slightly different. Not saying the Focals are bad...just that the JBLs image better and need ZERO eq. The Focals needed more tuning and were not flexible with angles and such...the JBLs are plug and play...once you get over the tweeter being HUGE...4.5"x6"!!!!

It does sound good....when I have 11 of the woofers shut off...LOL. With "the wall" on...it's a li'l bass heavy.

 

Where can I find one of these test discs?

 

I usually use the official db Drag discs, you may be able to get them from www.termpro.com

The rest of my discs I bought at Circuit City over the years.

They now have alot of this stuff on Apple I-Tunes.

 

What kind of music do they use for testing? Rock, jazz, hip hop, ?
