There aren't much as far as cables that need to be ran when you think about it-

-VGA video input from CPU to screen in dash
-USB from CPU to screen in dash
-power/ground/acc from screen to CPU power supply
-speaker wires from radio harness to amp(s) in the back
-accessory wire from BCM in fusepanel to power supply
-USB extention from CPU to USB hub in glovebox
-power/ground for amp(s) in trunk (power supply has a remote line out for external amps)
-RCA line outputs from computer's sound card to line driver to amp(s)

I think that just about covers it lol
How much is all of this going to cost you in regards to parts and materials

Thumbs up

This is a very intriguing project. Please do post more info on the installation, materials, and the endless number of applications you can do with it!

With everything- computer parts, screen, all necessary cables, GPS antenna/software, etc., it's around $1100 or so.

Everyone's been asking me why in the hell would I want to do this...when I explain it, the general reaction I get is "damn, that's a good idea!" lol.

I did plan on putting an in-dash double din dvd player/screen (Kenwood DDX-7017, Pioneer Avic-D1, Alpine IVA-D200, etc.), but I thought about it...a screen would most likely be a little over $1000...for about the same price I can have a computer that is FULLY customizable (I'll show you guys pics of the skins for the interfaces- they look awesome), with GPS, wireless internet access, touchscreen control, and as much memory support that I could ever want to store my music/movies/videos/pictures/etc. onto...I thought it was a great project to start on :)

Here are some screenshots of what some programs look like when used with these system:

That's an awesome project. Commercially, you could be onto something. I am in the electronic document business and I have access to over 400 printers nation wide. When I am on the go, the capability stop at a rest area and send prints is very interesting or if I have a FM with me, they could do it on the road. How would you approach the possibility of using your cell phone as a modem with the ISP capabilities they have now. Great project, can't wait to see the results.

That's exactly what I did last year on my 2002 Suburban. I wanted a PC to run an RV GPS program (I tow a trailer) and also be able to run diagnostic and monitoring programs for the Suburban engine computer. I ended up making a custom center console with the PC, a DVD player, a VHS player, a 4-in, 4-out video/audio selector, and a 7" LCD VGA screen. In addition, I have a 10.5" overhead flipdown LCD screen for the kids in the back seat, a backup camera on the Suburban tailgate, and a camera input for the rear-view camera on the back of the trailer. The whole system is run from a second battery under the hood so I can use it with the engine off without fear of draining the starting battery.

This was a pretty big project, but I think one of the things that allows us to actually start such a project is that we don't realize how involved it would end up being :) .

BTW, I would like to indroduce myself as a new member. I just ordered my HHR last week. As soon as the weather gets warmer and I get the HHR, I have some mods planned.
