Pal
Thanks' for the replies everyone.
They ordered in a new PAL unit and installed it Friday and it seems to be working OK.
Looks like a learning curve, it's a pretty clunky interface, but at least it works.
Since I have two iPods I took one and did a manual install of my files so it doesn't take as long to find something. I put about a quarter of my music (3 - 400 songs) on it and about four books. I figure I can load different stuff as I feel the need.
I found that it won't play video podcasts. It will however play the audio casts so I loaded some of those I have.
Love the clarity of the books.
I think it was worth the hassle and the price for the convenience and safety factor.

Having a dealer installed PAL tomorrow along with my heated leather seats the dealer threw in.. your thread scared me as I'm an Apple guy too. I'll report my feelings on this system when I get it back Thursday.
OK here's the straight dope from an iPod nut, music nut, Chevy nut!
The PAL is a great idea but isn't worth the money.
Its clunky, slow, ill thought out and a PITA to learn.
Because its so slow, it takes me 60 seconds to simply navigate to a song. I have nearly 60GB of stuff on my iPod. This doesn't slow it down when using it normally - but the PAL takes F O R E V E R to scroll from one song to the next.
I'm so disappointed. I'm not going to ask them to give me my money back even though its outrageously expensive. I'm going back to just using the jack on the front (AUX). The sound quality is the same, and it doesn't charge but I have a charger to plug in when needed.
If it were just faster (say, 10x faster) I'd LOVE it.
Just my two cents.
OH - and iPod classics work "just fine" if that means just like any other iPod. But it also works S L O W as my 4G iPod.
Sigh.

PAL and XM not playing well together
Is anyone else in this forum having the same problem that rommer described? I am having the same issue as well. When I go to XM, it cuts out alot, going to X0 and back to the station. I have to cycle through the radio bands and it will clear up. When the dealer programmed mine, it instructions said to disengage the XM by taking the key out and holding the door open for 5 minutes, we didn't wait that long. I thought our issue might be a result of our hastiness. I might get it reprogrammed Monday.

I know this reply is sometime after you guys have hashed it all out - but I am having the same issues that you guys are having with the PAL. It is incredibly frustrating when your listening to a song on XM, and the radio flashes to XM0 and then back...I have had it to two local dealers, and one gave up. The second one, Sullivan Chevrolet here in Champaign said there are several TSB's out on this issue - but no cure yet. I would yank it out and return it if it wasn't for the fact that I cut and spliced wires....
Mine has been in for about a month and it has pretty much the same issues....
However recently I have been having another problem......Whether it is in XM or Ipod it will simply cut off and then I have no XM or Ipod.......
If I pull the car over and shut it off door opened and closed and wait for a couple of minutes it will come back on........on a trip recently it did this 3 times.......
I am not liking this much........
