No, many of the new cars DO NOT use a key WITH the push button start. The Vette, for example, has no ignition key. It utilyzes a "magic" fob that instantly transmits a signal when the ignition button is pushed. Only works when the fob is within approximately 2 feet of the dash. The same method is used for the doors....no key. A latch, much like the hatch latch on our HHR's, is used on the doors. When you touch the pad, the fob transmitts a signal and opens the doors......even if they are locked.

It's ironic that someone brought this up. I had been thinking about installing the Corvette system on my HHR. The parts are terribly expensive, however.

Lincoln, Lexus and some others use the same idea.

My wife has a Lexus IS250 and it has the same push button. It is great because she keeps her key in her purse. Get in, push the button, and off you go..

 

I know this is an old post but it seems to be the only one that I can find on the subject of 'push to start' button. Has anyone done this and/or done a 'how to' on the subject?

 

I did it on my last showcar the company ignited gave them out to all the showcars at the show with a sticker to place on our windows that said
(push button start) you usually mount it in the cigerete lighter area looks great
but these are cheaper can be found on ebay $30 ish and the key has to be just put in the lock to work then push i like the lexus better! $$$

My cousin's 41 Packard has push button start. Just another gimmick that can fail down the road in the new cars. I guess I don't find it that hard to insert a key and twist to start a car.

My first car, a 10 year old 1950 Chevy had a push button start, a step up from the earlier foot floor start but you still had to turn on the key. My 1948 Pontiac had a floor start but I converted it to a push button. Easy in those days

When I first saw the ad I laughed and said that is not new. I guess not having to use a key at all is new.

I like the idea but wouldn't spend a lot of money to have it.

I remember GM cars had an ignition that had two or 3 positions. Lock, start, and ACC. (I think). If you set the key in the start position and removed it, you could start the car without the key. I think these were used in the 1950s.
I put this ignition in my '65 Buick LeSabre and never needed the key.

It seems that no one knows how to install a working 'push to start' button with the exception of taping the key fob to the dash except the OP. I withdraw the question.
