Question stubby antenna's

Hi everyone,
I'm a middle age female who is SOOOO clueless about mods. One thing I have noticed is so many good folk's on the HHR forums mention as one of their mods is a stubby antenna on their HHR's.

Now, I know the following questions will probably bring a good laugh, but I am seriously wondering what is a stubby antenna, why is it a good thing to have? Last of all, the antenna on my HHR is already stubby looking. Does that mean a stubby antenna was standard equipment on my 1LT?

Thanks for your input as I will finally know what this means!

The antenna that comes on the car is about 8" long, my stubby antenna is 1.5". It gets rid of the whip on the roof.

From one middle aged female to another who was clueless about mods until purchasing an HHR...here's what a stubby antenna looks like. It replaces the stock "fishing pole" antenna.

My stubby is black and only 3.5 inches in length. Love it. I think the stubby antenna is better looking than the longer original antenna. Plus, I like the more modern look of the shorter fixed shaft, especially when it stays perfectly still while moving -- not wagging in the wind. Got mine through stubbyantenna.com. They have a great selection of different stubby styles and different finishes (black, chrome, etc.). The stubby antenna does reduce your reception somewhat, but I listen to my iPod primarily, my Sirius satellite radio next, and then CDs. Only use the terrestrial radio during football season when I can't get the Titans game on the NFL channels on Sirius.

You can also use a stock chevy "ON-Star" antenna, they work just as well.
