troubleshoot dead door speaker
2008 LT, stock stereo. The speaker in the passenger door is not working. How can I deteremine if the speaker died, or if that channel on the stereo is gone? I know one way would be to swap the passenger door speaker with the functioning driver door speaker and see if the problem follows the speaker. Hoping there is a simpler way?
First thing to do is pull the panel in the door with no sound. Remove the speaker. Test the resistance level of the voice coil. If it is the proper ohm load reattach the speaker and tap in to the wires at the door panel. Car off. Use a double a battery and touch the wires to the battery + to + - to _. just tap em should hear the speaker pop.
Most likely the speaker is blown and the resistance will tell you this.
First thing I did was rip the factory speakers out of mine. 100% Alpine now.

And now I realize that when adjusting the Fader to "Rear", there is no "Rear"...so I have THREE blown speakers?!?!? If replacing speakers only (not replacing the head unit, not adding an amp), what would be good replacement speakers?
Everybody's ear is different. Get to a local store or shop and listen to as many 6.5inch speakers as you can. Buy what sounds best to you. Make sure they are running off Head unit power.
Not entirely true. 8 or 4 ohms is the AC impedance of the speaker. With a multimeter you'll be measuring DC resistance. For a 4 ohm speaker it will probably come up 2-3 ohms, for an 8 ohm speaker probably 5 or 6 ohms. If it measures 0, that's a dead short in the speaker or the cabling. If it measures infinite, or overload, that's an open circuit. Either the speaker's blown or the there's a break in the line.
FrugalAudio - Thanks! I will disconnect the wiring from the speaker before checking the speaker. After that, just for the heck of it, I'll use the mulltimeter on the leads in the connector, just to see if there is a dead short in the wiring. Seems a bit odd that I apparently have THREE bad speakers.
