USB / Aux extender into top cubby

One of a few of today's projects - extending the USB & Aux ports from the back of the aftermarket head unit up to the top cubby.

The extender I bought was this one from Amazon.

I used the hole saw starting in the removable cubby, cutting through so I'd be sure both holes lined up. Then removed the cubby to finish the rear hole. I used a battery powered ratchet with a couple adapters, since a drill would be too long & not allow for a straight approach. I used a 1" hole saw, which ended up being not quite big enough. I used a dremel to open up the hole in the removable cubby just a bit, so it has a good tight fit.

I then opened up the rear hole so there would be space to maneuver the cubby into place.

Then I fished the wires through between the vent tubes to go down behind the head unit.

Finished product!

Nice project, and great finished product. Thanks for the pics, it gives me a better idea of how I'm going to mount some switches in the compartment.

It would be nicer if the pix were hosted on this site. That way they will available available after your account at wherever is closed.

BTW, the cargo box recall has not been performed on your car.

Don, what exactly was recalled and why, if you know?

2006-2008 models need an owner applied/GM supplied piece of plastic stuck over the latch pin so that the lid doesn't fly open in an accident. They mailed them out to registered owners, I am guessing that they would be available from GM if you asked, since it was a recall.

The piece sticks on with double sided tape in the red area.

I hadn't noticed a way to upload the photos to this site. When I click the insert photo icon, it seems to just let you insert a link from an already hosted photo. I'm open to changing them to being hosted on this site. I've experienced the frustration of finding a thread that is almost informative... if the pictures weren't all broken. lol

I'll have to check into the cargo box recall. Would it also make it so I don't have to keep pushing the button 20 times to get it to open sometimes?

On another note, sadly I dropped the box while cutting the hole in it, and the two gears on the back broke off. Looks like they just help slow how quickly the lid opens? Any simple fixes?
