New Rear Springs, which end is up?

I just got done replacing the rear springs on my 2008 LT with "variable rate" springs, since I regularly haul freight.

The question is: which end is up? The OE springs did not have any difference on the ends, the "variable" ones have a definite difference ; the last turn on one end is closer together than the other

(OE) I I I I I v. (new) I I I II.

I installed the "smaller" end up, I hope that's right.

Anybody got ideas?

Variable rate or progressive rate springs are installed with the tightly wound coils facing down, if by "smaller" you mean the tightly wound end, then you got 'em in right.
