Rattling noise under dash when I apply brakes

OK has anyone ever had what sounds like a rattling noise come from under the dash just above the peddle when you step on the brakes? I'm taking it in to have it checked but I wanted to see if anyone else has had the same issue. I have a 06 LT by the way

Yep. Steering column rattle. Back when the early models were still under warranty some were fixed. Mine didn't make this rattle until something like 140k+ miles. A complete rebuild of my front suspension and having to replace the steering rack cleared it up. Most of the noise was coming from the steering rack.

Thanks for the reply. How much did it cost to get it fixed? Will the steering get worse if I don't get that replaced and is it just a noise issue that can be ignored?

One other thing I'm only getting the rattle when I step on the brakes, there is no sound any other time.

steering rack can be repaired or replaced.
Replacing the steering rack costs no more than 200 USD per part + the work of the mechanic.
Repair of the steering rack will cost less than 200 USD, but you must find a trusted professional for quality repairs.
As a rule, people prefer a replacement because They don’t want to risk with an unfamiliar mechanic.

The steering column can be repaired or replaced.
Replacing the steering column costs about 150 USD (without a motor, only iron) per part + mechanic's work.
The steering column repair consists in replacing the cord joint (I'm not sure I applied the correct term, I mean the movable joint between the shafts). Finding a Verified Professional is a little easier than for a steering rack. And the repair will cost much less than the replacement.

I say all these words based on my realities. But participation in this forum convinces me that my world is not very different from the American one. Everything is more or less the same.
Prices for spare parts from Rokavto and others.

PS Perhaps, in the USA, steering gear repair is illegal. I was already surprised by similar laws regarding exhaust and mileage. Check your legislation.

Noise from the steering rack is a sign of wear, steering will slowly deteriorate. There is a chance that the steering will jam at one time, but this probability is negligible. Cannot be ignored

Noise from the steering column is the cause of wear on the articulated joint. The steering almost does not deteriorate, but there is an unpleasant backlash. You can ride safely for many years, but the noise will tear your nerves. Can be ignored, but it is desirable to fix.
