rear disc conversion

rear disc conversion
Want to share. I've manage to do conversion from drum to disc without rear beam swap from hhr ss or cobalt ss. As You can see below it is regular beam with drums aplication. All You have to do is a bracket for calliper. Unfortunatly no pic for calliper bracket in my album.
This mod does not require hub replacment ! Also got a tip for this : opel astra h has disc at rear beam. It's p&p aolution because hub has same bolt pattern as hhr and calliper bracket is bolted through the hub, there is lot of tread on hub studs to perfrom an instalation.
Now attention, hhr ss disc is 270mm solid rotor, cobalt ss/sc is 270mm solid rotor. Opel astra is 264mm solid rotor.
Astra was sold in America under saturn brand in 2008. Rock auto link / astras rear disc size refference : https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=1896&jsn=601
With that knowledge I was able to do 292mm vented disc swap which can be found on cobalt ss turbo models. Also notice fact that bracket it self has some thickness, in my case it is 12mm aprox 0,5 inch on each side. End result is increasemnet of rear widht of 24 mm aprox 1 inch total.
Pic of 292mm rotor mockup
Hard to see but clear factory 17 wheel
Stopping power is amaiznig ! Trust me ! I passed by all brakes stages : all stock , ss non brembo rotors / drums , ss brembo set / drums > ss brembo set / 292 vented disc

Great information, I would like to see the caliper mounting bracket and the e brake cables
I looked up the brackets of course they are discontinued, no listings on EBay for the part numbers provided. On any of the GM parts sites

Thats why i mentioned about saturn. Here in Europe bracket it self is easy find and cheap. Part number is GM 13173019 R and GM 13173018 L , but do not know would it work in US ???
for refference got pics unfortunatly not mine
GM europe diagram
Used beam. From what I know it is a bit less wider then hhr one in overall widht
Cherry on top, picture of brackets for 292 mm rotors. link for photo : https://www.courtenaysport.co.uk/Mou...scription=true
Pricey one, thats why my was custom laser cutted without recess on center - forgot to mention that
Will post pic underneath my hhr with ebrake cables. But fastening of ebrake cable to calliper should be the same as hhr ss or cobalt ss
pic of calliper i use and e brake leaver

Thank you, so your mounting plates are laser cut steel plate? Interesting. Yes those brackets in the photo are very nice but price is a deal breaker for an 11 year old car. Unfortunately our parts yards don’t keep a car over 5 to maybe 7 years ( longer if it’s a corvette or other sports car.)

Up here it’s a matter of inventory movement, if it’s in inventory and not moving any parts, send it to the crusher, pile them up until scrap metal prices go up. Several of the big yards from back in the day have sold their properties, retired , there is no more yard hunting allowed, no getting some nice seats , or carpet, the yard boys toss brake drums, suspension parts in some really nice leather seats!

If anybody is interested on those factory brackets for disc conversion, i can help with shipping from europe. Calliper it self can be form us market - hhr ss or cobalt ss. All this is for 264mm but it is only a couple of mm offset to do custom bracket (as i did) for 270mm hhr ss rear disc. Beauty of this swap is p&p.
Some time ago i saw sell add on formu marketplace (old one) with custom bracket maded to work with ss rear disc. From that moment i was serching till now i've got biggest rear disc that gm invented to fwd platform such as delta body.

I saw that ad, the plates are the actual ends of a bent SS axle beam. Still , rear discs are interesting. But, my rear drums are brand new, and not much chance of selling them, to offset the cost of the rotors , cables and calipers , backing shields and pads.
