Im thinking my rear brakes are in need of replacement, they seem to growl a bit. I have 190k on the odometer and it has the original rear brakes on it. should be a fairly ez job. How many miles are you getting on the rears before replacement? Any suggestions on brand? probably go with napa unless there is a better choice out there. Bought it with 155K on it 5 years ago ( 2014) The previous owner put 1000 miles on it a week. I recently replaced lower A-arms ( balls joints) sway bar links-greasable- Front rotors/ pads ( I think they were OEM but not 100% positive), front wheel bearings. This little mota-car has been a great one. just put the snow tires on it last week, This vehicle keeps the miles and salt off my truck---2017 Silverado Z71 just hit 7200 miles! thanks in advance.

 

The shoes probably don't show much wear BUT you will be surprised how much difference new rear brakes make. They should be manually adjusted every oil change, the self adjusters suck.

You better inspect the front pads, guessing is really bad policy.

 

I replaced the fronts a few months ago. AC Delco pads and rotors. It stops good, . But thanks for the heads up. Ill look it over good. When i swapped the tires out, the drums spun without and drag or noise, so maybe those adjusters are on vacation. I see they sell aftermarket self adjusters, are they an improvement over stock? and should i replace them as well?

I think so, next spring if it’s still available, I’ll order one for the BlackSwan, the OEM drums and shoes are wearing out , but funds being what they are , I’ll have to budget and save up for them.
GM drums here are more then that and don’t have the coating to protect from corrosion.

Didn't see this until today, the brakes are installed and as you guessed, it didn't need them. Adjusters weren't seized either. A little less than 3/4 of material left of the shoes. I didnt notice anything different from the new to the OEM other than the coated drums. They looked about the same. Getting 190,000 mile drums off proved to be a little problem but Liquid wrench around the stud holes and hub and PB Blaster on the opposite side, ( ran out of liquid wrench) Let it soak for 30 minutes and used an air chisel with a blunt tip, and hit it between the lugs on the flat spot between all 5 spaces and they popped right off. About 20 seconds of air chisel per side and it didnt damage the OEM drums. Hardest part was getting he e-brake cable installed with that spring. Had to have a friend to help me. I have them adjusted so that they just touch. One tip, after the drums are on and you think they are close to being adjusted, step on the brake pedal a few time to center the shoes and you'll have to re-adjust again.
The kit came with everything, shoes, drums, spring hardware kit and 2 adjusters, left and right. Test drove this morning and the braking is much better than before, I'll adjust them manually every 6 months as I have 2 sets of wheels/tires winter and summer so a quick adjust spring and fall will be easy. .Total cost with shipping was $105 from rock auto. The kit is high quality and its from Power Stop.
