So my SS has about 150k on it and I have noticed the handling just is not what it used to be and I am wanting to freshen up the suspension. I have ordered all new FE5 struts and shocks but I am wanting to also replace the springs. I see the fronts are still available from GM but the rear springs are not. All I can find is a set of MOOG replacements for the rear. I know a lot of parts says they are FE5 "spec" when they actually aren't.
Am I overthinking it and should just keep the stock springs and replace the struts and shocks? Do springs "wear out"? Another option would be to get a set of the YYZ springs from Powell but those are listed for a Cobalt, I know the HHR has different spring rates do to the added weight.
I am in the process of this also, shocks, struts, LCA rear bushings, maybe sway bar bushings too.
I just finished the rear shocks, what an easy job. Remove the wheel and tire, 2 bolts on each shock, install the top bolt, then jack up the bottom of the shock a bit to align the bottom bolt. Torque to spec, reinstall wheel and torque. Done.
The new shocks reduced body roll in the twisties, I pushed pretty hard, I'm sure the ESC was about to kick in. Looking forward to replacing the front end parts too!
Old shock and new.
This is the rear spring, both sides look like this. The rubber pad is coming apart, is this something to worry about?
Jounce Bumper for rear springs - F1/F3 (not sure about F5)- suggested by Donbrew on behalf of Firemangeorge
- GM Part Number: 25993737 - MSRP $56.62 - Online Price $33.56 (prices from a while back, current price likely is different)
I wouldn't worry about the soft foam isolater (#1)
As long as the black hard plastic disc part (#2) is in good shape, then the spring is still "isolated" from the metal frame.
