trying to upgrade to SS brakes

Has been working a day now to try to update to the SS brakes and the right side is ok, but our left makes me crazy, everything is perfect until I tightening the wheel, then it sits solid . But after looking more carefully I see something. I wonder if the big washer that sits between the hub and strut should be one on both sides or just on one ?? my HHR have one on the right side but not on the left

The flange of your hub bolts flat against the knuckle.
Take a picture of both sides so we can see a comparison.

Welcome to the site, I didn't have an issue, slide on the rotors, bolted on the SS caliber brackets, loaded the caliper and installed it, bolted on the wheel gave it a manual spin, no contact issues.
Now just to confirm, you didn't try to put the caliper bracket back on from the LS/LT small brakes did you?
Only possible reason I can think of for contact with the rotor

The part in the red circle is a splash shield, should be on both sides. You can get the new/better design from a GM dealer.

I replaced that with SS splash shields 6 months after I swapped in the SS brakes , so that shouldn't be the issue, however if you don't have one in place at all it would have been a contact issue also for the smaller LS/LT rotors

Number 7 in this parts picture

ok I have the SS splash shield on the right side but no on the left side and I think it's the reason I get contact, will try to find one and redo it again. Thanks for the help.

Do you have the non SS shield? Like the one Don circled in red in your picture?
Just wondering why you took those spacers out unless you replaced the hubs, or it was missing from before

Needed a cheep and funny car so I bought the HHR 2 months ago and now it needed new brakes so I took it apart and found that it only has one shield (the one in the picture) on the right side but nothing on the left. Don't know who changed the hub before. anyone who knows the number to order one and were??
