speed reduction in 'Drive'?

Is it normal for an HHR to use 'engine braking' (much like the intermediate setting) when in Drive? I started noticing that my car was starting to 'grab', or to better put it, control deceleration while coasting.

as far as I know the engines fuel is cut off, when coasting, while in gear to help boost gas mileage(in some cases). it may feel like engine braking, but ive never noticed it. this thread has some info on it(and some arguing)https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/2-4l-performance-tech-14/deceleration-fuel-cut-off-16957/

Makes more sense now. It's barely noticeable, but I guess I'm sensing it because I drove a 2003 Ford Focus as a daily driver for the past 4 years.
*edit* on another note, I start noticing it whenthe INSTANT MPG reading is at 99, so this does make more sense.
