A term from the days of old, when salesmen would go town to town and sell products that promised to heal all kinds of ailments, when it was in fact just a concoction of either high alcohol, or opium, or both. it is one of the main reasons we have the FDA today.

Side note: if you can find an old old old Sears catalog online, you can find all kinds of 'snake oil' remedies in their. Most were made with opium, or cocaine, and had a high alcohol content. My favorite ad was a hashish candy, that was."fun for the whole family" and a " cure for what ails you".

My apologies, geg. When I say 'snake oil' I'm metaphorically referring to products that promise to do certain things but it is questionable and/or unverifiable as to whether or not it can deliver on those promises. In this case, there are many products in the stores here that promise to increase fuel economy but in actuality only deliver negligible (if any) results.
