Tall tales and fish stories....

Mike Venturino, a gun magazine writer, once wrote that you can take the morally strongest, most upright guy in the world, put a target gun or fishing pole in this hands and he'll turn into the biggest liar in the world! I can believe it. I have heard stories about being able to hit the eye of a needle at 300 yards, shooting deer regularly at 600 yards (one shot kills no less) and catching bass four feet long and four hundred pounds out of a pond 20 feet across.

It seems like the same thing is happening with HHR's. Either Chevy is making HHR Hybrids, or there are folks stretching the truth about their gas mileage. Well, maybe there are some folks that are really poor at math, but I am not counting them. ;) Some of the claims are downright silly. It reminds me of a guy with a new Tahoe telling a friend of mine that he is getting 34 mpg IN TOWN. She says he is a really nice guy. I called "BS!" fast. Even claiming that on the highway is ridiculous in a Tahoe. I think we need to edit Mike Venturino's column to include HHR owners...... Heh, heh, heh. God Bless, Marc (20mpg town, 29mpg highway...really)

Maybe the Tahoe is Canadian. :D

Wow can tell were this stemmed from. Those numbers I gave are not unrealistic at all. Im not saying im getting 32mpg in town every tank. Just managed to squeeze that out of one and by using some extreme measures wich I no longer use(to much of a hassle), but I am still seeing 26-28mpg in town and 30-32mpg on the freeway really. I feel if I had a manual my numbers would be even higher. As far as calculations go mileage divided by gallons = MPGs, so lets say a normal tank for me I can get almost 400 so 385 divided by say 14 gallons =27.5mpg. If my calculations are wrong by all means correct me. I have litterally had some one else check my calculations and plugged my numbers from my reciept directly into a mpg calculation on another forum im on. To say that 3 different people/programs are all wrong is a pretty big statement.

Heres my numbers, so it was actually 31.52mpg sorry my bad, 122.6 miles and 3.89 gallons of gas, which according to my calculations is 31.52mpg. Heres another one for you 547.4 miles and 17gallons(put a few gallons in at a quick stop to make sure I had enough) 95% Highway miles doing 75-80mph, resulting in 32.2mpg. So now its your turn to do my calculations and see for yourself. If im wrong I will admit it and go on if your wrong do the same.

I haven't pointed any fingers. I was reading back over the "Fuel Economy" threads and saw some that sound pretty far out to me - unless a car is a hybrid. At least, they are way higher than Elvis gets, even accounting for the heavy foot in town due to the novelty of a new car and a GMPP intake.

I bought the HHR for fun and with an eye on future high fuel prices. I don't drive around like a hybrid driver inciting "hybrid rage" from drivers behind me. Maybe some do, and can call down big mileage numbers. Doesn't sound very enjoyable though.

Look back at some of the big numbers folks claim, and don't they sound like "instant MPG" numbers rather than "average MPG" numbers? I guess Elvis would post those "average" numbers if I pointed him downhill, cleared the values in the readout, and started rolling downhill!

God Bless, Marc

Given that I've posted one of the highest numbers on this forum, I'm sure that you're referring to my 42.5mpg statements. I'll happily take you on a highway trip, employing the driving tactics that I do. I am currently running my HHR on it's first tank of E85, and am still showing a little over 26 mpg, despite nearly doubling the amount of city driving that I normally do.

I have stated before, and I'll say it again. I earn my high mileage numbers.

Kinison_fan 10-25-2009 07:52 AM

I'm averaging 25 combined (mostly stop and go), avg speed 28-29.
Best highway was 31 mpg, but I was going 70-75, and running through mountain area.
Its peppy, and gives me good numbers-I'm happy.

Different driving styles make a big difference, that's why there is the little disclaimer "Your Mileage May Vary"..

Comfortably Numb 12-21-2009 05:22 AM

While anyone can say whatever they want. I know what I've seen and how much gas I've put in, in fact I have photos of a lot of it. The fact that you don't get the mileage others do in no way whatsoever proves that some of us don't get considerably better mileage. I have a photo showing my Fuel Range 591 miles and another a few days later showing 641 miles. That works out to more than 36 MPG and more than 40 MPG by my calculations using 16 gallons as a full fuel tank, it may hold more I don't really know, I'm sure you will say that my DIC is not accurate, I would say that I have checked it and it is the same as my calculations and there is no way it could be that far off anyway. The way you drive has a tremendous impact, and my guess is you drive considerably more aggressivly than those of who claim much better mileage, seeing as it takes around 2 minutes for me to reach 60 mph and I bet it takes you about 30 seconds or less. Even the cruise control is far more aggressive than I am. I would be more than willing to bet that if my 2007 had instant mileage in the DIC I would sometimes see it over 60 MPG and reliably see it around 35 MPG. I'd be willing to bet that in the trip I will go on in a couple of days I can probably go the entire 600 + miles I will drive in just a little more than one tank of gas. The vast majority of the Hybrids you refer to don't get anything close to the EPA mileage they are rated for either, mostly because of their drivers. Of course what I say is simply my word, you will obviously disagree. No one makes you read or believe anything. The fact that I and others claim much higher mileage than you do really means nothing to you in the end.

Jeff® 12-22-2009 07:09 AM

I check and reset the average calculator occasionally. This morning it was reporting 22MPG. When the car was new and fuel economy was on my mind, ao that my driving style promoted good mileage, it was 28-30MPG.

Since then, I've turned into a turbo madman and care less about mileage, and more about cutting time.

Comfortably Numb 12-27-2009 02:23 PM

Home now after a trip of 1235.2 miles and I put in a total of 34.21 gallons of gas. That works out to 36.1 MPG, exactly what my DIC says. All that with the cruise control on about 50-60% of the time and snowpack on the roads for about 500 of those miles.

ecl 12-27-2009 05:54 PM

Thats cool at least your proving that these cars can do that. How fast was your average speed, and then also for those 500 miles of snowpacked roads? Just asking to point out that speed makes a difference in mpgs.

Marcruger 12-31-2009 05:27 AM

Having driven a bit on some two-lane road recently, I did see Elvis go over 30 mpg on his instant gas mileage readout for a while when traveling at 55mph. My problem is that I am either in town, crawling along, or on the interstate going 70+. Elvis certainly does not get stellar mileage at either speed. It is very rare for me to be able to go steady 55mph anywhere. I am thinking perhaps some folks getting great mileage are traveling that speed, maybe in a 2.2? God Bless, Marc

cosmic1 12-31-2009 11:02 AM

Back in the 60's I bought a 66 Nova SS with a 283, 3 speed on the column and one of the first things I noticed was the terrific gas mileage I got. I drove this car hard. Well I decided to see what it would do at the track. There being three good dragstrips in the DC area (where I was stationed), I took it to Budd's Creek (MIR now) first and was astounded when it ran a bunch of mid 10's on street tires no less. Trying to figure out what was up, my friends and I did some tuning and got it run low 10's. Then on a trip to my hometown in western MD (first long freeway trip) I was astonished with my mileage - 36 mpg. A couple of weeks later at Capitol Raceway, two men in dark suits wearing sunglasses approached me and said they were there to take the carb off of my engine - they would give me a brand new one and a couple hundred dollars for my trouble. Being young, dumb and trying to live on E-4 pay, I said sure. The SS never ran quicker than 14 flat after that and the best mileage I could get was around 16 mpg.

In my case, yes.

IgottaWoody 01-01-2010 12:20 AM

Speed....not always,, there are a lot of speeds where the milage does not change much.....in town gets hammered with the stop and go and all the increased idle times at red lights and stop signs.....cruising thru town with a light foot I see 30 plus at 25-35mph
alot of it depends on the gear and load.. and of course who happens to be watching as you drive by....!In town you cannot maintain a steady foot, so milage suffers.

Marcruger 01-01-2010 08:44 AM

Hey "Woody", I agree, as I also have seen some high numbers with a light foot in town.....but those stop lights just kill my mileage. Like you said, we can't go steady enough in town. On the highway where I can hold steady or set the cruise, it seems like my car's 2.4 just gets worse the faster I go. I have only checked highway mileage in cruise at 55mph and above. At 55 my readout shows 32mpg or so, but then traffic is piled up behind me. At 60 it drops a couple of mpg's. At 70 I am down to like 28mpg, and at 75 it goes even lower. :-( I haven't checked 80 as I don't cruise there, but I am guessing it would drink like a Bentley. Heh, heh. Still, it is better than my previous cars, so I cannot complain. I guess I was not thinking that there may be folks out there who do drive all of their mileage at a steady 45 or 55 mph with no stops....I just cannot imagine it where I live. God Bless, Marc

IgottaWoody 01-02-2010 12:28 AM

Same with the SS..above about 68 mine gets harder to maintain above 30 while feathering the foot, unless I have a good wind block in front or a good tail wind. The wifs car (LS) has 33 on the DIC and it hasn't been touched since early last year and she isn't exactly a light foot ( Two warnings in a years time). She says she up around 60-65 but also back roads thru small towns and lites and intersections. But thats a 2.2 for ya.....

tylertaylor 05-25-2010 09:18 AM

im getting 22.2 mpg with mostly city driving and like mabey 28 ...29 on the highway thats on e 85 with my foot on the floor 2.2 lt

RkyMtnHHR 05-26-2010 08:21 AM

2.4 LT2 5spd manual 27.5 mpg avg on 30 mile commute (16 miles hwy, 17 miles side streets). This is every tank.

The Curly 1 05-29-2010 11:16 PM

I get 22-26 in the city depending on how I drive. On the highway I get 28 (75+ MPH), 36MPG @ 65 MPH, 42 @ 60 MPH. I usually run 75+ on the highway though I know I could do much better but do not want to get run over on the highway!
I have done some things to my car and not sure how much it helps it. I put a 2.4 intake manifold on it, Airiad intake filter, and a complete 2.4 exhaust system on the car with a Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler. Car sounds really good runs good and gets good gas mileage when I keep my foot out of it. My thinking was to let it breathe and it should perform better.
I also lowered the car with Goldline springs and put a front air dam on it. I put a little taller tires on it so my gas mileage actually is a little better than stated verified with my GPS's (2)

1970judge 05-30-2010 01:12 PM

Do these things have 15gal tanks in them?

If so, I am getting average of 27.3mpg. My car's low fuel light goes on at about 410 miles, so I immediately get gas, I am sure i could push it further. If people behind you aren't honking at you while accelerating from a green light, you aren't driving slow enough.

IgottaWoody 06-01-2010 11:14 PM

16...though I don't know exactly what the "usable" amount is....

Condition1 07-05-2010 10:58 AM

i still have not reset anything on my dash yet. i have about 1100 miles. my average, so far, is 27.8mpg. i have made little of no effort to drive any certain way. i just drive.

my pickup truck needed a lot of work and got crappy mileage. so, this is a huge improvement.

does the GMPP intake do much to improve mileage? i love it aesthetically, i love the sound, and i love the idea of not having to go through so much to check or change the air filter.

Drrick 08-29-2010 10:00 PM

Mpg

I have 4900 miles on my 2010 2.4 and I get about 26 to 28 mpg. I can not a ford to drive to push the speed to hard. I have to many tickets so MPG is now on my mind and not getting there. With the price of fuel near $3.00 I'm not sure how anyone can not be looking to get all they can out of every gal!!!!:thumb:
