06 HHR Engine Noise - Anyone know what this is?

Hi,
I've been working on this HHR for a while now. I documented the timing chain replacement here ( https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gene...de-bolt-65594/)

When I went to restart the engine after buttoning it back up a while ago I was getting noise. So I put it on the back burner and now I'm ready to tackle the new issue of the noise .

Does anyone know what this noise might be? (
). Before replacing the timing chain I did not have this noise.

I checked and re-checked the timing and it is dead on perfect. It starts right up perfect but this loud knocking noise came out of no where.

Any help would be appreciated.

George

You checked the timing and all timing components, by removing the timing cover again?

Between the extreme sludge build up, all the metal shavings from the old timing components, and applying and sanding JBWeld inside the engine, I would be thinking that's rod knock. Caused by blocked oil passages.

Timing might be dead on perfect, but the timing chain is slapping around in there! I suggest you pull the front engine cover off and inspect the JB weld repair.
Also check the balance shaft chain it it’s out of time, the engine will vibrate and knock

I agree, removing the timing cover for inspection is the first course of action. I hope I'm wrong about the rod knock.

Ok. I wanted to get some feedback before pulling everything apart again.
I'll update soon.

Thanks

Do a snap throttle and if it's a main bearing you'll know it. The engine is toast.

I hear a sound behind the knocking. Like a metallic whirring, makes me think timing chain.

Or balance shaft chain over tensioned!

Yeah, that does sound fatal. Maybe a result of whatever prompted the chain job. Or just a coincidence. But then, reading the saga of the chain job does reveal some possibilities.

Easy to over-tension the timing chain by deploying the tensioner before installation, but how do you over-tension the balance chain?

Oldblue recently found that when installing a water pump it is possible for the sprocket holder to slip a bit causing a "whirr" from the balance chain.

I don't hear that in the vid. All I hear is a rod knock. But, I have a tin foil ear. Maybe the snap throttle would be more telling.
