2.2L or 2.4L?

2.2 v 2.4:
I totalled a car September last year. Found the HHR and liked it. Actually, my daughter pointed one out as we drove around looking. Took a test drive and was a bit disappointed in the 2.2L. Sales guy asked me if I'd like to test the 2.4 to compare. With the slight increase in cc's, the difference was day and night. The 2.4 rules, IMHO.

Hey, you're talking about a difference in 10-20 cents per gallon since the 2.4L requires premium gas. If you get the same mileage as in a 2.2L, it still ends up costing a lot more. I went from a 3.8L in my minivan to a 2.2L in the HHR and am still not disappointed. The HHR used to hesitate when I needed power quickly until I had the injectors cleaned at 16,000 miles. Now, it's running even better.

Pay close attention to some of the gas mileage threads. The 2.2 has an edge in fuel economy. There are no free lunches in the law of physics. If you want more power you have to put larger volume of the stoichiometric air/fuel mixture into the engine.
Another factor to consider is fuel grade: In order for the 2.4 to perform to its rated horsepower/torque numbers, premium fuel is required. It will run fine on reg 87 or mid grade 89, but at reduced performance.
Do you really want to be paying for premium gas right now? If you don't, the performance difference 2.4 vs. 2.2 won't be as much.
Another good point was brought up, above. You're going to get clipped pretty hard on the deal. HHR's of any flavor (SS to recent to evaluate) are Depreciation Princes and you'll take a beating trading it in right now.

This whole 2.2 versus 2.4 pissing match will never end, will it?
Face it, the 2.4 owners paid more and got more engine, and have to use premium to enjoy the full power increase at the same MPG as the 2.2. Really isn't that big of a deal now that the SS is out now, but I'd still keep my 2.4 over the 2.2 cars I've driven now.

Why? You're probably going to lose a lot of money on that trade, so I'd assume you're just having a lot of problems with the car you have now?
You'll be hard pressed to find a 2.2 owner who will tell you the 2.4 is better, or a 2.4 owner who will tell you the 2.2 is just as good. My opinion after driving both, including 5-speed models, is that the 2.2 is just as good driving around the city. However, the 2.4 is better for highways, hills, and mountain terrain where the engine can rev up to 3,000 rpm and the VVT kicks in with the power when you really need it. 2.4 models also have the cooler exhaust tip

Not any problems, just an opportunity to get out of a finance rate and get 0% financing. wifey is having baby #2 and a chance to save almost $4k over the next two years + a new car with a new warranty seems like a good idea.
i'm just wondering if i am going to miss - and by how much - the pep that the 2.4L has...
really wanting the ABS...if next winter was anything like last year the ABS will really give me piece of mind with 2 little ones.
