2.4L gas mileage

Ok, USEPA says 30mpg hiway. Just picked up my 2006 LT and I got about 28 on purely hiway (70-75mph). Is that about what I should expect? Maybe a little better after break-in?
Only worry is those OEM Firestone Affinities, not rated too well in the white stuff.

Highway mileage rated by the manufacturers per Da Gov's requirements is at 65 MPH. You got about right for that speed. HHR's generally drop MPG over that speed.

Welcome to the forum Brian.

The OEM Firestone Affinity on the HHR are far superior to the Affinity tires that came on both of my Malibus.

Those Affinity tires were crap.

The Affinity tires seem to be all right in the wintertime. I had considered getting snow tires for Stitch last year, but after driving a wintertime, I decided they were okay.

The only trip that I took with the HHR was back in May. It was about 120 miles away and I drove about 70mph, about 95% was on interstates. My HHR is a 2.4L with the 5-speed manual. On that trip the DIC said 32.5mpg. The HHR had about 5K miles on it at the time.

As for the snow traction of the stock Firestones, I just put a set of four Bridgestone Blizzak Revo 1 snow tires on. I tried the Firestones in a few snow situations and they weren't very good. They're better than a rear-wheel-drive car with all-season radials, but after having Blizzaks on our minivan I was spoiled. The Blizzaks made a HUGE difference on the HHR.

I have a 2.2L and automatic transmission and I haven't seen much of an increase in mpg as the miles added up. I did, however, see about a 2 mpg difference between doing 50-60 mph versus 70-80. I actually saw 30 mpg traveling at the lower speed. I might get only 28-29 on the interstate.

We get 26 or so on the highway at 75-80MPH with the 2.4/auto. We have the Firestone GTAs, and I too was concerned by reviews at tire rack and the like, but they have performed well in the snow and otherwise.

I have seen 32.6 on a road trip on the highway, but usually with the mix of city/highway I'm around 29. Turtle has 3200 miles on it, so not all the way broken in from what I've heard

Mine (2.4l, 5-speed) improved from 22.5mpg city when it was new to 26.5 mpg city @3600 miles. Haven't done any road trips in it yet. I'm very happy getting 26.5 mpg around town in something that has atleast some pep.
