Update: I didn’t buy the 2009. The owner wouldn’t let the car be checked out even though it would have been at my expense. I passed. If the car were local, maybe I would have made a different decision. Anyway, I’m keeping the 2010. I’ve posted a thread in the correct (I think) forum for repair questions. Thanks to everyone for their advice.

I’m considering buying a 2009 HHR 1LT with about 8800 miles, and yes, the mileage is accurate. It was owned by the first owner then garaged for a couple of years by that owner. Second owner bought for wife, but she wanted something bigger so garaged for another couple of years. He’s now selling it. Carfax verifies information re car.
Is buying this a good idea or am I just asking for trouble? If yes, what should I look for as far as problems go?
My current car is a 2010 HHR LS with about 120,000 miles.

Welcome to the site, snap it up! Yes sitting can be a problem, but it hasn’t been that long.
inspect the fuel lines for corrosion, after you get it, change the engine oil and filter, drain and replace the Dexcool in the cooling system.
I doubt there would a flat spot on the tires , but be prepared to purchase new tires.

My son and I are in disagreement on this. My 2010 needs about $1500 in needed but not unexpected repairs. My son thinks I should fix the 2010. I kind of want to buy the 2009 and sell the 2010.
I’m trying to be practical and make the best financial decision.

Me?, I would fix the 2010, buy the 2009 and drive them both!!
But there is no cure for my HHR affliction!

The car is 8 hours away from me, but he’ll meet me halfway. Since he’s willing to drive it 4 hours, I guess he feels pretty safe.
Everything you suggested will be done when I get it home.
My biggest worry is that all the rubber parts are possibly comprised and that could lead to major problems.

Unfortunately, keeping both isn’t an option

Now my age is showing since I used the word rubber. I’m referring to any part that would be degraded from lack of use. If the long term sitting has caused degradation in lots of stuff, I might be looking at major problems down the road. How do you know unless you rip the car apart? So better to spend $1500 on which one, I wonder.
I’m obviously asking questions where I’m not 100% sure of what I’m asking. I’m not a mechanic, and I know just enough to be dangerous.

The rear LCA bushings are easy to change, and might still be ok!
