91 octane gas for 2.4L
91 octane gas for 2.4L
Hi everyone. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. There is a question I want to ask all of you. I read in the owner's manual (yes I did look it over) that GM recommends 91 octane gas in the 2.4 L engine. GM says they recommend it, but it's not required. With the way gas prices have been, I've been using the regular 87 octane. Do any of you use the 91 octane and do you see a performance difference? In the owner's manual it says that if 87 octane is used, you might see a slight decrease in acceleration and might hear some slight spark knock. For the decrease in acceleration, I haven't noticed it and wouldn't notice it because I've been using 87 octane so I wouldn't know how much better performance I would get with 91. As for the knocking, I'm not hearing anything. The 2.2, GM doesn't have any special recommendations, they say to use at least 87 octane. Any input from all of you would be nice. Thanks.
Before I bought my 2.4 I asked my dealership the same question. This was my question and their response...

Claudia,
I probably should have researched this prior to contacting you, but I heard a rumor tonight that the 2.4L motor in the HHR requires premium fuel. Is this correct?

The 2.4 engine does not require Premium fuel. Our Inventory Control Manager has been driving one for months and never used it and it would state specifically in the Owners Manual as well. Even our SS Supercharged in Chevy's 4 cylinder engines don't require it.

Welcome to Chevy HHR. The place where the points don't matter, yep, they don’t matter just like a PT.
Enjoy the site. And if you have questions, there is a search button on the tool bar above, which a lot of the items fall under already.
I use the 91 on trips, it gives you better mileage and more oomph..
I use 87 for my around town, now that it 3.00 a gal here
We like Pics around here, there is some good how to's and interesting mods (modifications. like the doorknobs, lower grille and upper grille, intakes, and lots of others.
Enjoy your stay

Thanks for the tips everyone on the gas. I'll probably run 87 octane most of the time. I read your sales rep's response EZ, and it does mention in the owners manual about 91 octane being recommended, but not required. Thanks mcanaw for the how to link for pics. My HHR isn't modified or anything, but will post my pics I do have. Take care everyone

Hope this helps.
I do the same thing. I seem to actually get better mileage with 89 than I do with 93. Seems like 93 is too rich for it.
Then again, I may have needed to run a couple of tanks on 93 to tell the difference.
I'm still making around 400-425 miles to a tank.
