Anyone here buy the 2.2 because it just seemed smoother and a bit sweeter than the 2.4?

I've test driven both, and had a week's rental with a 2.2, and it seems to me that the 2.4 is quite a bit harsher than the 2.2

Any input is much appreciated!

I'm about to take the plunge on a used HHR, and I'm not sure if the harshness I felt in the 2.4 was an isolated incident or an actual characteristic of all 2.4's

My 2.4 is smooth..Or I would not have bought it.. But both motors are fine....

But did you mean the ride quality or the motor..

 

I drove both and could not find any reson to pay the extra money for the 2.4 so I order mine with the 2.2 very happy with it.

Thanks for the input. Right now, price is everything, and I'm looking for a used one, so I guess I'll ocnsider either one. Perhaps the 2.4 I drove the other day was a rare case, but the engine was just plain loud. Noticeably louder than any of the 2.2's I've driven. Thanks again.

 

I bought the 2.2 as it meant maximum fuel economy, and was in a less expensive vehicle. It's performance is "sufficient".

 

actually I wanted the 2.2 for the fuel economy. I have 6600 miles on it so far and I really like it. The performance is more than adequate. I think my 09 actually is rated at 155hp and so far I've gotten 32.5 mpg on the highway with an automatic trans.

 

Loud is a sound, not a harsh feeling.. It may have had aftermarket exhaust ?

After driving both..... The 2.4 had a greater punch on premium fuel, and a little more on regular. I love my 2.4 and my parents have a 2.2 I don't regret my 2.4 choice, but the 2.2 isn't terrible in comparison. Both are great cars and you get the best styling! :-) Good luck with your choice!

 

I did think the 2.2's I have driven as rentals were smoother than the 2.4 I had in my 06. The 2.2 just feels more "refined", but the 2.4 definitely had more power.
