Anyone tow with your HHR? We do and are having issues...
Sounds like you may have a grounding issue. A simple check if you have some jumper cables is to connect the ground cable between the vehicle chassis and the trailer chassis.
My utility trailer for my truck has no ground wire connection. It grounds through the trailer hitch/ball. If the trailer ball is rusted up, the lights act up until the rust rubs off. Usually a few turns after leaving the neighborhood.

it is interesting, my trailer which you will see on my signature, had no problems with my ford excursion, but when i hooked it to my HHR same exact problem. Ended up looking for chaffing and other connection probs. Ended up rewiring the whole trailer. No problem last four years and 200,000 miles.
yep i agree with everyone else...you have some trailer wiring issues...you can get a whole kit to rewire you trailer for about 25 dollars at any car part store. Make sure to ground it really well by scraping any paint off ground points.
It's pretty basic actually. It comes down to elimination starting with the vehicle.
If you have a tester, first test your HHR harness plug end connector sockets to see if all is well.
White ground
Brown Tail
Right Green turn/brake.
Left Yellow turn/brake.
If that tests OK then it's the trailer.
First make sure that your trailer ground wire from the HHR is sound at the attachment spot.
It should be connected to the trailer frame thru the trailer plug white wire, unless you have a tilting trailer.
Each light on the trailer grounds to the frame of the trailer, unless a separate white ground wire is run to each lite fixture.
Also it wouldn't hurt to test the plug/connector to make sure it is OK on each socket on both sides of the circut .. ie. HHR and trailer side.
Each bulb grounds to the bulb socket which grounds to the frame or separate white gound wire.
If you find a problem with the HHR wiring harness here is what I would buy.
Curt Custom Fit 2006 HHR complete wiring harness.
Part # C55432
On sale thru Etrailer.com $21.31
This is a Quality Harness that easy to install.
If it's in the trailer and you "cannot pinpoint" the fix I would just replace the whole wiring/lights system.

On trailers, there is always the problem with small cuts in wires that touch the trailer frame. You just have to track it down. There is no serious quality control in trailer lighting or installation.
