Armrest Solution
Since nothing is wrong with my armrests except the design, I came up with a solution that's removable and very comfortable. I used 1/2" plywood as a base, 2" foam, quilt batting, and a vinyl covering. I figured vinyl would be much easier to keep clean. I found a color that matches the interior perfectly. Can't wait to try it out when I pick up my son from college next weekend!

I have to make sure when I have a passenger that they don't suddenly slide their seat forward or back.
I just took a short drive and find the cup holders aren't any more blocked than normal with the armrest down. However, I can put my elbow on the armrest and still reach the steering wheel. This will make long trips a lot more comfortable!

Well, the first test of the new armrest was a great success. It's really comfortable. There's one change I need to make and one I'm considering. I with add rubber to the bottom of the armrest so it doesn't slide sideways. I planned to use drawer liner but don't know if I'll attach it or just place it under there.
I also had an afterthought about attaching cupholders to the front of the pad. I have an automatic so don't need to reach the stick shift repeatedly. I have some of those cupholders that slide in the window slot. I was going to attach one or two to the armrest and see how they work.
My son, sitting in the passenger seat didn't like and didn't use it. I'm not sure why. It doesn't really matter because the driver/owner has priority!

Hmmm...looks great, but it'd definitely put my arm at an uncomfortable angle. My mom likes to put a pillow on her armrest when she's driving on a long trip to support her arm high enough to drive. Must be a woman thing.
