Bike Rack Question

I've had my HHR for 3 weeks now. Love the car. I need to buy a bike rack. I do not think I want to hoist my bike way up onto the roof so I thought I would look at a rear mounted collapsible one. Anyone have any knowledge which brand is best? I'd like a sturdy, dependable one for 2 bikes, that has rubber cushioning on the bars and clips so as not to damage the finish on my car.

If you just get on Yahoo and type in Chevy HHR bike rack, you get many hits, some may apply ,some not

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4411 I bought this one at the local Performance, they usually have another 10% sale (off the sale price) going on. It'll do both 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 so you can use it on different vehicles.

Personally I'd say you have two options, for both you will need to install a hitch.

Then either a 20"x60" hitch haul with the bike slots for the tires.

or

A hitch mounted fold away bike rack.

Both have benefits, they won't touch your paint. If you go with the first, you also have the capability to haul items you would not want to put inside the car. Plus additional luggage capacity on trips. But the rack will holds the bikes better.

solman, does the hitch haul work with the 1 1/4 hitch? Do the fold away racks work with the small hitch? I do not remember seeing these except for the larger receiver hitches which are not available for the HHR.

When I initially bought my hitchhaul, I had a 2" reciever on my truck and a 1.25 on the wifes MPV. It came with a 2" draw bar so I used an adpater to the Mazda. When I put the hitch on the HHR, it is also the 1.25 so I just purchased a new 1.25 drawbar (centerbar). I remember when I bought mine initially, I could have gotten either size at that time. When I bought the replacement centerbar, it's was a different brand, but still fit perfectly.

Now for the bike rack, can't really say. I haven't looked that closely into them. They do sell the adapters, but personally, after using one. I would not recommend them. They extent the entire rig out a good 18" further and it seemed to droop more with it.

With the rack posted above, the adapter is a 2 in square plastic block with a cut out to fit over the 1.25 rack. It does not extend the rack further.
