That may be an old wives tale. The compressor works just as hard on all the settings, defrost, recirc, bi-level and normal. It cools better on recirc only because you are cooling inside air, which has a lower temp, rather than trying to cool the outside air.

The word air conditioning came about because they condition the air to be cooler. You have to take the hot air out for a/c to work.
